Oh yeah, every afternoon after school, I was down in the woods with a shovel digging my hole for a bunker. Just big enough for me. My sisters were screwed.

I've never seen this or 'Threads' - would've been just before my time as I'd have been 2 or 3 when they were made. Watching them both in full today, I think.

Weird, this was just on last week on one of the British channels I get here.

But they made us watch this back in grade school when it was on, like it was part of our education somehow. confused I had nightmares for months.

do you remember when USA declared war on Libya (1986?)
our vice principal made an announcement over the PA at our school with the words: "may we live to see tomorrow"
we all cried ourselves to sleep that night and the next day the school was inundated with calls from angry parents for frightening the shit out of their kids. Thanks to mandatory viewing of both Threads and The Day After as part of our RE program, we were pretty certain of how things would be in the morning when we woke up.

Oh God and when Chernobyl melted down, I was certain that purple clouds of radioactive fall-out were going to float over to England. I actually went into a chemist and asked if I could buy iodine tablets, because I'd read someplace that they'd flush the radioactivity out of your body.

I also designed a new British flag in art class, because I was convinced that once the bombs dropped, I'd organise a rebel army in the woods (to fight against the tyrannical British government which lead us all to nuclear doom). lol

And even when I was slightly older enough to know better, I'll never forget my mother coming into my room, to wake me for school one morning. She was unusually ashen-faced and told me to look outside my bedroom window...

When I opened my curtains, I was sure that the bombs had dropped.

There'd been a hurricane over England overnight. She never explained; she just left me staring out the window, surveying the uprooted trees and debris.

Whenever I think of Chernobyl, I always remember this awful joke...

Q. Why shouldn't you buy Russian underwear?
A. Chernobyl fallout.

i.e.: "Yer nob'll fall out." It's probably only funny if you read it aloud with a Mancunian accent. lol
