Are you kidding me? NEW MOON beats Dark Knight's opening day box office record

From E! Online:

New Moon Eclipses Dark Knight!
Today 12:10 PM PST by Joal Ryan

As a PG-rated Robin might cry, "Holy crap, Batman!"

New Moon smashed The Dark Knight's single-day and opening-day box-office records with an estimated $72.7 million Friday, its studio reported today.

If the movie's unprecedented midnight business was "absolutely freakish," then its unprecedented full-day take was simply phenomenal.

"It doubled the opening day of the first movie—and Twilight was no slouch itself," Box Office Mojo's Brandon Gray said. "It's just sensational."

With New Moon having already eclipsed its $50 million budget, two of Dark Knight's showiest records, and Twilight's entire opening-weekend gross, about the only question left is: How high can this thing go?

Batman, for one, will be happy to learn that New Moon probably won't beat Dark Knight's ultimate speed record: the 2008 film's $158.4 million opening weekend. Gray guessed New Moon will end up with a $140 million Friday-Sunday.

At this point, though, it's dangerous to guess what the movie might, or might not, do next.

Earlier in the week, the wolf-enhanced vampire adventure was expected to score a big $80 million opening weekend. Then a bigger $100 million looked more like it. By yesterday, after its $26.3 million midnight record, Exhibitor Relations was calling for a gigantic $125 million-$130 million.

The lesson here must be: never underestimate the power of 13-year-old girls.

New Moon is for tweens

The Dark Knight is more geared to adults. It's more exciting.

Apparently New Moon is the tweens' version of Dark Knight: the sequel that you and all your friends have to see or else you're lame.

The adults were avoiding the kids by going when they were still in school. Very smart.

The MINUTE my kid got out of school, she and my wife dragged me along to a matinee yesterday.

I'm SOOOO not a Twilight fan shake, but I have to say, aside from really poor pacing, the movie wasn't so terrible. And being there with a theatre full of squeally, excited girls, a bunch of cougars, and their boyfriends who heckled the screen was actually a lot of fun.

This "Gaylight" shit is getting on my damn nerves. I was making out with my lover the other night, and then Robert Pattison came on the t.v. and he PUSHED ME OFF OF HIM!! You know, I used to LOVE vampires, when they were sexy blood lusty killers. Now they're walking around in the day light and not dying, falling in love with stupid bitches instead of killing them. These aren't vampires, these are Vampussies.

Um... I may not have put it quite like that, but I generally agree.

Part of the reason New Moon was somewhat more tolerable is they made some attempt to make the vamps a bit more threatening in several scenes.

I thought that was interesting too, and based on feedback I'm seeing online, a lot of people agree. I think maybe they tried to make him look not as attractive because he was supposed to be depressed... and also because we were supposed to like Jacob's character. But up against the newly buff Taylor Lautner, Pattinson looked downright awful. Their tricks worked too well maybe.

The only good thing about that movie was the fact, Taylor Lautner had his shirt off 80% of the time.

I had a ball seeing it last night. lol
Between the sqeals, hooting and the all-out laughter at the cheesiness, it was a really fun crowd to see it with, girls, gays and a handful of confused-looking straight boyfriends. The whole Twilight thing is a total guilty pleasure of mine. It's absolute crap. I fully admit and recognize that. But I still like it.

I agree with you 126%.

Twilight is such a steaming pile of crap, for so many reasons. I cannot fathom why anybody, even 13 year old girls, enjoy it.

Next time I'm interrupted getting my coffee by Twihards squealing because they just saw Robert Pattinson, I am going to go punch him in the face. I'm serious. mad

the only thing I do know is this, Vampires are soulless killers, having given up their own souls for eternal life. They also tan poorly and hate sunlight...
