But if you don't offer, then he shouldn't really ask, especially for a one-time dealy.

In that case no-you shouldn't, but if you ask for a ride yes you should this reminds of that gas station scene in menace II Society where nobody has petrol money

You do when you're riding a bus or taxi. You don't know that driver, yet you HAVE to pay them or you are walking. Why should someone who owns a car be any different? They are doing you a service by letting you in their car, the least you can do is offer gas money.

The least you can do is give some gas money. Otherwise you are just "using" that person. Use a taxi or a bus. Yeah, but a taxi or bus isn't free. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

it is not leeching it's common courtesy to offer people that you know a ride free of charge , when you're going in the same direction like offering guests food and drinks when they are visiting or offering rounds in a cafe[Edited 12/5/09 9:38am] This is totally a Dutch thing though! Most people in the States that I know will NOT do this. It's just too damn expensive. If I offerend to pay for a round for all of my friends while out in the U.S, they would all first look pretty shocked, and then hail me as some kind of hero or something for actually buying them all drinks. And then of course, not offer to get the next one themselves. Car Etiquette: ol' USA
If you offer someone a ride, you aren't suppose to ask for money/payment. NEVER. To be honest, if payment is offered you're suppose to decline. LBC could have offered to give the guy somethin' just out of common curiosity but after that manipulative stunt, you did right to keep your hands in your pockets. Why do I think he won't be asking you if you wanna a lift again? If he wanted gas money he was suppose ask/tell you upfront LBC. Not ask you for gas money after the fact.... in the car, as he approached your home, or whatever the case may be. Tacky and rude..... ===== [Edited 12/6/09 13:55pm]

Every Friday my boss offers to give me a ride. I never offer gas money for one...she talks so much I never get a chance to offer and two...It's a 4 minute drive. What is that in gas money? 58 cents?
(Last thursday she drove right past me while I was at the bus stop ) If she wants gas money, she can take it out of my check. [Edited 12/6/09 12:17pm] "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

This is dumb - he didn't ask this dude for a ride, the dude ASKED HIM if he could give him a ride specifically so he could use the carpool lane. If he wanted gas $ he should have said it up front - "in exchange for the ride, can you give me some gas $?" - so he'd be able to weigh his options & see if he wanted to bothered (maybe he didn't have any cash on him, or hadn't planned to part w/ whatever he had). But to offer so you can benefit & THEN ask once the person is in your car is tacky as fuck. & the ability to use the carpool lane probably saved him some gas by avoiding traffic.
I agree that it's nice to offer gas $ in any ride situation, but it wasn't necessary at all in this case... [Edited 12/6/09 13:49pm]

how do you feel about being invited to go somewhere, explaining that you don't have any money, being told that that's okay, you can pay the driver/host back, and then staying at a hotel which is part of the costs....?

I don't drink hard liquor anymore, so I have no idea how much those drinks cost these days. Obviously you can find drinks for cheaper, it all depends on where you go, but I KNOW wine is way cheaper by the glass here. Because I take advantage of that fact quite a bit.
