Too Fat to Fly?

WTF??? I wouldn't sit next to this cat, no fucking way. I'd ask for a seating change.

On this issue in general. I would say that the airline should offer him a 2nd seat (booked in advance) for little or no extra charge. (say $20). But if it is determined that the person has no need for a 2nd seat then they are charged full price including all taxes and all other fees. (just like when a person books an extra seat so they will not have to sit next to anyone).

You know the way there's a chart "You must be this tall to ride this ride" before you go on an amusement park ride? There should be a chart or document(no not some humiliating cartoon, but an actual measurement stated) that if you exceed it you HAVE to purchase 2 seats. If you can provide documentation that your size is due to medical reasons then the seat should be offered at no charge. If not, one should have to pay at least 50% of the price. I'm not big on airline pricing, but why should a business lose profit because of the way you choose to live? I'm not an insensitive person and I'm all for accommodating special needs but At which point do we accept any responsibility for ourselves??

I agree there should be a set standard. It just makes sense for all involved. Then no flight attendant or ticket agent at the gate has to be put out trying to figure out what to do and no person of size has to be embarrassed or put out when it happens and no one has to sit there all uncomfortable for hours.

If airlines were smart, they'd set this standard and offer special rates for 2 coach seats for those who meet these requirements or direct people to first class (assuming they'd fit into 1 first class seat). The special rate would encourage folks to actually purchase them ahead of time and would make it not so detrimental if it's found to be necessary when you get to the gate.

Best all around. nod
I meant to add that if someone is purchasing at a gate and there's question, there should be a private area maybe to determine size (maybe there can be two actual seats in a room someplace in the airport, easiest way to determine). I wouldn't advocate the attendant suddenly break out a measuring tape at the gate.

last time I flew I felt like I was too fat too fly and I'm an average sized individual (on the larger scale but still, I'm fat fat, just phat fat). I was so cramped. I can't imagine obese people seriouly trying to squeeze into 1 seat. It ain't happening I say just go ahead and let them have the 2-3 seats around and spread it out so the plane don't get overbalanced and fall out the damn sky!

And airlines need to stop being so damn greedy!

Discounted seat because you are fat? No way. We don't get discounted seats for extra room so neither should he. Pay for 2 seats or go on a diet. It's harsh, but the truth hurts! This is a safety hazard to everyone on board and a nuisance for the flight attendants. Unacceptable.

He's also sitting on the armrest, and everyone else is down in the actual seat. Plus, he's probably tall.

So it's a tall, big-butted guy on an armrest.

Ahh! I hadn't considered he would be sitting on the armrest. How uncomfortable!

Totally agree! It's ridiculous that we have to treat these folks with kid gloves. They are grossly obese and should pay the price for it or lose weight.

Agreed.

I was on a flight last year where this guy was too fat to sit in the middle seat that he bought, so he was moved to the isle seat, and the guy who was in the isle seat ended up in the middle seat.
It was about 2 or 3 seats in front of me. I remember being very annoyed because the isle seat cost $50 more than the center seat (it was an 'upgrade' seat). So the guy that ended up in the center seat actually paid an extra $50 bucks for isle seat which he had to move from because of the fat guy.

I know this because I almost booked that exact seat, but decided $50 bucks wasn't worth it for a 2 hour flight.

If I had booked that seat, I would have been very nasty to the fat guy that got the seat. I'm sorry, but he admitted (he was a loud motherfucker) that he flew alot because he loved golfing or some shit like that. This means that he KNOWS he can't fit in center seats. He knew that the minute he booked the damned ticket. So he KNEW he was going to end up in the isle seat. He was enormous, and not particularly gracious to the poor guy who ended up in his seat. he spilled over into the isle and over in that guys's seat.

I think airline seats should be at LEAST 2 inches wider and give you 2 more inches between rows---and this is for regular sized folks... but they're not. We all know what the trip is going to be like and how cramped the seats are.

That dude who booked that ticket knew what he was doing. There should be a waist size rule or something. I swear to gawd.

This is one of my pet hates.

I like to think I'm an open minded person - in fact, I'm practically brimming with kindness, goodness and understanding for my fellow humans. However the pure hatred I had one day when I heard the fat cow behind me on the plane demanding a second meal for free was the day I decided I wasn't as understanding as I thought.

And that bitch was huuuuuge
