If soaps aren't dying, they should be. It was a concept from the old days to entertain housewives but most women work outside the home today. Plus they still come up with the same corny story lines they did in the 50's. They suck.

I disagree I love the fact that ATWT and OLTL are pushing the gay agenda.

Yes, most of us are aware that the best 2 daytime USA soap operas of all-time are still here:

The Young & The Restless
General Hospital

But how many of you remember THESE from the old-school:

The Edge Of Night
Ryan's Hope
Loving
Another World
Capitol
The Doctors
Dark Shadows
Search For Tomorrow

Now is a great time to have a thread like this. I have a theory that the soap opera is a dying art form.

Don't believe me? Have you ever watch NBC during daytime hours lately? Days Of Our Lives is THE last of the NBC soap operas. Another World, Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach, & Passion have been cancel within the last 20 years combine.

Without question, soap opera are dying out because of today's information technology (YouTube, IPhones, etc.) getting better by the month to the point that people would rely on them more for a source of entertaining. The state of the global economy is another factor, since would be housewives and/or househusbands are now working more hour at their day jobs to the point that no one can stay at home to watch one soap opera (especially The Young & The Restless).

But the real reason why (IMHO) the soap opera is a dying art form is because screenplay writers DO NOT know how to write a damn good storyline anymore (BTW, have you ever notice how a show like General Hospital ended up being more about organize crime than about the hospital itself?!?).

Without spending too much longer on writing an essay, I would love to hear some opinions on the state of soap operas. Whatever happen to then?

You forgot The Secret Storm and Love of Life. lol

My mom and grandmom used to watch the whole CBS lineup in the early days, then mom switched to NBC till she finally ended up with just one...General Hospital on ABC, so I guess I've seen all of the old ones at one time or another.

From high school onward, All My Children was my show. I still watch it sometimes when I have the day off.

Dark Shadows was the most unique of the bunch.

I think it's dying because the storylines of soaps are so lame and contrived these days.

I'll tell you in two words what's killing the soap opera: reality TV. More importantly, shows like The Hills, The Real World, The Real Housewives series, and most of the VH1 and E! shows give all of the drama most of the soap opera crowd wants at only half the cost of a typical network soap.

Put Big Brother USA, Big Brother UK, & Survivor on that list as well. These reality TV show give you plenty of bitchy backstabbing characters as if they should have been on daytime soap operas.

It's just like the music industry...substandard content is cheaper to produce and sadly, there's an audience for it. disbelief

Yes they did, but after they murdered Noah, Julia got her revenge and killed the guy who caused them to hide then she kinda just floated on the show till they killed her off. it was quite grating how sloppy they made her return.

So basically, ABC soaps will be THE only things left on daytime TV if these cancellations continue. Damn, I feel bad for all of the CBS soaps fans.

BTW, this also means the One Life To Live has gotten a little better with their storylines.
