In the 1980s and 1990s, I used to watch "As The World Turns". I was at home the other day and happened to turn it on and didn't recognize any of the cast except for one or two of the older ones that used to be on there. The show looked extremely dull and I turned the channel.

Yes, most of us are aware that the best 2 daytime USA soap operas of all-time are still here:

The Young & The Restless
General Hospital

But how many of you remember THESE from the old-school:

[b]The Edge Of Night

Ryan's Hope
Loving
Another World
Capitol
The Doctors
Dark Shadows
Search For Tomorrow[/i]

Penciling in "All My Kids" what's wrong with you Tony? :- smile ?

I watched those.....

What killed the Soap's? When those dumbasses in NYC/LA discovered college students were watching the Soaps and thought all we wanted to see were young men and women. Ken and Barbie walking around shirtless or wearing a towel; these beefcake bimbos couldn't act and the storylines became so far fetched, they were an insult to my goldfish named Felix intelligence, may he R.I.P. wilted

By the way the chemical compound formula they claimed would bring a death blow blizzard (by the crazy ass evil scientist) to Port Charles, wouldn't have never done so. I can't recall the exact formula but believe me, that forumla wouldn't have created A vapor let alone water evaporatation in A cloud.

I feel a lot better, that's all I had to say. How ya'll doin'. biggrin

I've watched All My Children for almost all of my life. I've stepped out a few times but it doesn't take long to catch up.

As far as the soap dying off, I don't think it's so much their storylines. Don't get me wrong, poor soap wrting will make someone stop watching for awhile but they usually come back. It's just like the org. We all need our little breaks when things get dull.

I think it's all about the economy. People aren't buying the products that are being advertised during these soaps and therefore sponsors are pulling the plug on their ads. That's why some of the shows are getting rid of big time characters and many actors took a pay cut this year. Some soaps are relocating, such as AMC. They've been filming in NYC since the beginning but they're moving to Los Angeles next month and because of it, they're losing one of their most popular characters, Zach Slater.

no she "died" on the show, but it turns out it was some woman working in a diner in the boonies that looked just like her

so everyone thought katherine died and they had a funeral for her i think too lol

so that woman died, and katherine ended up marrying the widower
she came back, no one believed it was her, they thought it was the other woman out to get money (i'm not sure how this other character was introduced, i forget)

this was this year too lol

i guess every soap has to have at least 2 characters that cheat death on the regular falloff

Speaking of cheating dead, the characters of Angie & Jesse returned on All My Children a couple of months. During the 80's, Jesse was actually killed off in the storyline. Angie would move on with her life on Loving & it's spin-off The City in a relationship with Jacob (Jesse's looking alike cousin) for awhile up to the time The City was cancel.

Now all of the sudden (a couple of months of ago to be exact) Angie is back on All My Children (without Jacob BTW) and then a few weeks later Jesse is back on the show as well in one of the most controversial storylines ever: He faked his own death as part of some witness protection cover up.

The one thing that makes the writing of THIS^ storyline so stupid is the fact that many AMC fans remember Jesse died in the hospital many years earlier, as well as seeing him as one of the spirits from heaven saving the life of his best friend Tad. Again, the writers are screwing up!
disbelief lol

The writers screwed up when they let Angie wear that goddamn wig! She used to have such cute little boing boing curls and then one day she shows up looking like she scalped Annie Lavery!

HORRIBLE show but i LIVED for that shit.

I tried to get into some other ones like ATWT, general hospital and one life to live i think it was but I end up only caring about one or two characters and don't want to watch every episode if they're not going to be in it and after awhile trying to guess who's going to be on when I just stop watching.

If I ever find out in the near future that Luke Spencer was killed off for good on General Hospital, I'll most likely could care less about playing catch up with any past episodes that I've miss when I was working at the time.

I would talk about One Life To Live. But I don't think we'll have enough ABC soaps here in the org for me to even bother.

But THIS must I will tell you.....Vicki Lord & her half brother Todd Manning are two of most complex characters ever created for daytime soaps. OLTL would be boring as hell without them.

When did this happen?

Back in the mid to late 70's. She had a crazy sister, and she was more than a little loopy. Katherine set a fire on the drapes to keep the sister warm. Her sister didn't realize what was up and stood there w/ the curtains burning. The whole house went up. Everyone assumed Katherine was the body found. She went to her own funeral in a black veil so no one could see her. She walked down the aisle and put a rose on the casket. Her son and others looked at her and wondered who this woman was, but no one knew. I forget how she finally revealed herself later. OMG it was so dramatic! hahaha

By the way, here is Meg Ryan's character, Betsy, marrying Steven Andropolis

Oh my God, I remember that. These were my two favorite characters from the show, James and Lucinda.....such nice people. lol .....

Watching all of these soap clips is kinda sad... they really are dying off. Everybody's deserted them for reality tv, it seems...and reality tv is so much more crass...and unimaginative!

I was a CBS kid, mainly sticking to Y&R, As The World Turns, and Guiding Light, in the mid 80's. My mom and grandma were CBS soap people. I couldn't have cared less about Luke & Laura on GH. When I switched around a few months ago and saw that these soaps were being filmed on some hand held video camera, I about shit my pants. How cheap and horrid! I did watch the last couple of episodes of Guiding Light when it went off the air a few weeks ago. I knew Reva would end up with Josh, going back to Tulsa, OK (my home town!). I knew few other people.

Anyone remember Katherine Chancelor going to her own funeral after people though she died in a fire set by her crazy sister.

I remember the infinity symbol on a storyline in As The World Turns, during the same time India von Halkein married Phillip Spaulding (when the actor was temporarily replaced by John Bolger (who was the great nephew of Ray Bolger - the Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz).

I remember journalist Fletcher Reade having too many semicolons in his reporting, according to his editor Maeve Stoddard.

I also remember little Meg Ryan playing Betsy Lewis Andropolis on ATWT. She was good, and cute.

Dang. I watched a lot of ATWT, and Guiding Light.

Aside from the one's you named, don't forget Capitol, on CBS.

Are you sure that wasn't a storyline from Guiding Light with Lujack making a music video that when Billy Lewis saw it would go mad, from being brainwashed, and shot someone?

You are correct. The Spauldings were characters on Guilding Light, also. (Along with the Marlers and Lewises).

If soaps aren't dying, they should be. It was a concept from the old days to entertain housewives but most women work outside the home today. Plus they still come up with the same corny story lines they did in the 50's. They suck.
