1. Creme fraiche is not widely available in US supermarkets (it's all sour cream, which isn't the same).

2. If you can find it, it's usually on the spendy side. It's more economical to make your own.

Creme fraiche here is a bit thicker. I always use it intechangably with something called "schmand" or "quark" which has not been salted...so many darned thickened creams in this country..the choices are dizzying dead dead dead

I usually skip the creme, never used it much until moving here. Too fattening. Not worth the extra calories.
I can live without it.

it's great in pasta with spinach drool smile

Thank you. At home I used to save the indulgence in creme fraiche for special recipes and special occasions...and it always required a trip to an upscale epicurean market. But it's been 1o years since then and I was curious if the prices have changed, if it's more widely available, etc. I will admit I have grown spoiled here with its' wide availability, and the price can't be beat: it costs less than 1 Euro, or approx. USD .59-89 cents. The only reason why I don't use it so often is due to fat content. Yummy yummy stuff, though.

I thought that thing was available everywhere. Well, it's just a cheaper substitute for the Eastern European Smetana, anyway.
