The facts and figures speak for themselves as far as I'm concerned and that fine based on history of fines in tennis was ridiculously exorbitant and strictly punitive. The added threat of suspension was just a veiled attempt to keep Serena down the only way they can since they can't do it on the court. But you can keep doing your silly dance.

The fine is correct. Her behaviour was abominable. She's a great tennis player but it doesn't her the right to verbally abuse people and it sincerely showed a lack of sportswomanship. There are boundaries and she definitely surpassed them. Very agressive behaviour deserves a high fine. I'm satisfied she got it. She is afterall a roll model for many people. That wasn't so hard was it? "History of fines in tennis" - Less than twice that of the previous highest, some 14 years ago, when a player walked off court and accused the umpire of corruption. And he got a ban too! Not how I would define "ridiculously exorbitant". And who are "they" who are trying to keep Serena down?

Just to put the fine in perspective she took home $350,000 as a losing semifinalist and $210,000 for her share of winning the doubles, so instead of earning $560,000 she earned $477,500.
I appreciate the way Serena is handling the fine but I have the sense her behaviour won't be modified one little bit. "I am thankful that we now have closure on the incident and we can all move forward," Williams said in a statement released Monday by her publicist. "I am back in training in preparation for next season and I continue to be grateful for all of the support from my fans and the tennis community." I've always been a fan of Serena but had to roll my eyes at the 'drama' of her default. She can make it difficult to support her and I give her a pass on her lack of graciousness in defeat but stepping towards the linesperson with her racquet raised and cussing her out was absolutely wrong. She lost her cool and I hope she realised that.

Tennis needs to send a message that this type of threatening behaviour is completely unacceptable. Weak. Right. Because, of course, lines people and other officials deserve to be abused and physically threatened. Dropping Serena from a slam would send a message to her, the tour, and to kids playing tennis, the officials are sacrosanct.

Weak. shit, she and venus already play a reduced schedule. they just show up, beat your ass, wave and leave. i don't think she'd be devastated by one less tournament, and they would NEVER ban her from a major. ain't too many people gonna watch a davenport/clijsters final she and her sister can quit already.....they are great I have to admit....but they are so good that they have made women's tennis quite boring and nobody watches them, esp. when they play each other check all the empty seats next time they play or play each other perhaps she needs a beat down [Edited 12/3/09 5:02am] [Edited 12/3/09 5:03am]

That's bullshit, too. What product is coming out of sports? What enjoyment do you get watching a dumbass run around like a monkey for four hours, only to lose and then get pissy during a press conference? Besides, what about the people protecting you while you sleep? They get paid so little it's like they're working for free. They're fucking risking their lives, and they get paid WHAT? Meanwhile, we've got all these superstars in all these other fields making money hand over fist. Where is that right? I can not control that people pay to see that, but as they do and are willing to keep doing the players should get a fair share of that money. The price they can charge to watch should be based on what the MARKET will bare. Besides, what about the people protecting you while you sleep? so what should they get paid and where is the money going to come from? It is a fact that even in the military the ones most at risk get paid the least. Same goes across most jobs the ones that do the most work are normally the ones that get paid the least. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

No one here is whining about Tom Cruise making $20mil a film. It's the same thing. There's a problem there. An athlete isn't anything special, really. Good musicians and good actors are actually kind of hard to come by, but ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE can play sports. And yeah, people are whining about Tom Cruise making $20mil a film.
