Nothing says, "I'm still in college/This is my first apartment." like posters and random stuff taped or tacked to the wall. So my advice is to avoid that and FRAME YOUR ART. Even if it's just a poster - FRAME IT - it looks so much more grown up.
BlackAdder's lists are good for starters. I would just add that you need multiples of pots, pans, plates, etc. if you plan on "entertaining". If you only have one pot and are trying to cook more than one thing, it's going to take forever and the food will be different temperatures. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa.
