I think bear at least has to be heavy set (BMI 30+), but what is essential is that he must have some facial hair (Preferably a lot) and be GAY, a straight guy can not be a bear, not even bi curious, authentic gay. I suppose a bear could be of average frame, but preferably muscly, fat muscly or fat. A clean shaven obese man is a chub not a bear, to be a bear a chub must have at least a chunky moustache. A bear can be any age above about 30 I guess, but cubs are usually husky (BMI 25-35) and up to about 40. My partner is in his 60s weighs 100kg, but only 5 foot 6 (BMI = 35) so he calls himself a small bear, and I am 33 5 foot 10 and weigh 90kgs (BMI =27-28) and therefore consider myself a cub, as my build is more average/husky rather than overweight/obese and I have stubble and bumfluff fur basically. I have a book about the requirements of a bear. There are many classifications, such as a behr being a clean shaven hairy gay guy whose overweight. A teddy bear is a very obese bear (BMI 40 or more)
