Seemingly odd/interesting question on ESL Kids Korean test As some of you may know, I am an English teacher based in South Korea. Anyway, I was looking through some of the questions my intermediate students are going to be facing in their upcoming speaking test. One of which is:-
'If heaven exists, what would it look like?' How do you suppose 11/12 year old (Korean) kids answer this straight off the bat?! What odd questions did you or your kids get in school tests? I remember I had to identify show tunes from the musical 'Cats' by reading sheet music. I can't read music! You? There's Joy In Expatriation.

Blimey! That's a hard one.
I work in EFL too and once made the mistake of asking a Turkish class to describe what God would look like (after listening to One of Us in class). It didnt' go down to well (and I had to smooth over the use of 'slob' too!)

(I am a bit surprised about their reaction though because that old cliché image of God as an old man with a white beard, looking a bit like Santa Claus and often used in cartoons, is also pretty well known in Turkey but not used very often because fear of God is a very serious issue there. However, I wouldn´t have expected a negative reaction or any kind of tension in the classroom. Maybe it has to do with the AK party and how they´re emphasizing religion in daily life). " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I think it had more to do with the absence of iconography in Islam and that the idea of 'picturing' God was blasphemous. We all had a good sing song after though and I told them that a 'slob' was just someone who didn't think much about his/her appearance.
