WHOA!
I'm so sorry to hear about that, I hope all is well. Thats one of the main reasons why I don't keep pets in my house, I have kids and as much as I'd like to think that I'm in control, sometimes things get outta hand.

I hope she is doing well and is recovering!
On a side note: teach your kids that all dogs bite. Teach them to not go up to any dogs, even ones they know. When the dog wants their attention the dog will go to the child. I know some dogs are good with kids. But like people dogs can be in a bad mood and revert to their wild animal instincts. Even a family pets have been known to all of a sudden attack a family member. And never be so foolish to say "my dog doesn't bite." You never know what will trigger an animal to attack. Dogs are still animals and they still have their bite triggers. It wasnt just one known incident because apparently this owner has had dogs removed from him before and it was her head!!...I mean come on it wasnt like it was just her hand. I think the reason the destroy dogs when they attack is because if they attack a person once they will do it again and next time the child might not come off so easy. As it is she has to have her head stitched up. Im sorry...I love my dogs no end but if they viciously attacked a child I would hand them over to the authoroties...not go into hiding like that asshole has Oh by the way...I LOOOOVEE ROTTIES!!! Our dogs are used to being around children. But they are animals after all and we would never leave them unattended or let a strange child (or grown up) just come up to them without proper introduction or the dogs knowing they're being approached. We once had one dog that turned out to be vicious and he had to be put down (last resort, we tried everything ). We couldn't risk it, having our nieces/nephew and friend's kids visit. We'd put the dog behind a gate and tell the kid's DON'T GO NEAR THE GATE...kids are kids, next thing you know, a niece is there petting the dog. Our St. Bernard is actually very protective of kids. If even WE pick up one of the kids in play and the kid screams or there's commotion, Bogie's there pushing in between the kid and whomever. He ain't havin it. [Edited 11/8/09 14:16pm]

I hope your niece makes a complete and speedy recovery. If she doesn't have allergies, her parents may want to become dog owners themselves so she may allow herself to heal emotionally.
That dog is probably afraid of kids and attacked your niece because that damned owner allowed kids to mess with it. Most dogs that attack children are dogs that are left outside and not supervised while kids tease/scare them. Shame on that owner for not being more diligent and protect that dog from abuse. I agree with you, you HAVE to put a dog down that will attack a child before the dog learns to go for the throat. Dogs are great, but no dog owner should harbor a potential child killer. One attack is enough. [Edited 11/8/09 16:28pm]

[Edited 11/8/09 13:57pm] Yep, they get a taste of human blood and if they like it they'll attack again. I think another reason they destroy the animal is to test the brain for rabies. At least that was why they destroyed the dog that attacked me. I seem to recall my parents talking about that with the sheriff while we were in the emergency room. The owner is someone my sister knows and her little girl had gone to give the dog a hug..AKita's do look rather cuddly, and the dog swung around and bit her!!! Apparently the dog is a bit old...but damn!
She was such a brave little soul sitting on the hospital bed with a huge bandage covering most of her head and her big brown eyes barely peeking out. When they put the needle things in for the drip she didnt even flinch, all she wanted to know was when she could have her icecream. She will be having an overnight stay and then surgery in the morning (its night here now). Apparently the guy who has the dog is now hiding it WTF????? I know people love their dogs, I adore my two dogs, my oldest is nearly 9...but seriously if one of mine bit someones child I would put it down myself!! My sister is about ready to go and get rid of the Dog herself and is absolutely fuming! The dog deserves to be shot like Old Yella. I know THIS^ opinion will not be a popular one in the org. But I have no mercy for any dog that hurt a human child.

Sweet little Fluffykins would likely never decide to snack on their owner despite maybe taking a nip a time or two. But if you have a dog that already has aggression issues ya just never know. Even if they don't like the taste, they may just decide in their little doggy mind that in order to be a good guard dog they have to eliminate ALL other creatures in the vicinity, whether they walk on 4 legs or 2. That dog should be put down. It would be the right thing to do. Next time the next attack on someone could be fatal. Exactly.

Sorry to hear this story and wish your niece a speedy
recovery. It's certain types of dogs that have a certain aggession level that owners should always keep in a kennel or tied up around young kids i.e akitas, pitbulls, german shephards, rotweilers. [Edited 11/8/09 20:18pm] Don't laugh at my funk
