My little 6 year old neice had the top of her head, from hairline to near the middle of her scalp, ripped open by a Japenese Akita today. The owner is someone my sister knows and her little girl had gone to give the dog a hug..AKita's do look rather cuddly, and the dog swung around and bit her!!! Apparently the dog is a bit old...but damn!
She was such a brave little soul sitting on the hospital bed with a huge bandage covering most of her head and her big brown eyes barely peeking out. When they put the needle things in for the drip she didnt even flinch, all she wanted to know was when she could have her icecream.
She will be having an overnight stay and then surgery in the morning (its night here now).
Apparently the guy who has the dog is now hiding it WTF????? I know people love their dogs, I adore my two dogs, my oldest is nearly 9...but seriously if one of mine bit someones child I would put it down myself!! My sister is about ready to go and get rid of the Dog herself and is absolutely fuming!

OMG...that's terrible. Poor thing. What a brave child, though. I hope she's ok. Give her all the ice cream she wants.


I swear that's why I love cats. You never hear of them chasing kids down the street or biting a chunk out of someone. I love dogs too and have had many, but I prefer cats now.

Ack! That's awful. A dog attacked me when I was a kid I got bit on the upper right arm, upper lip, my right nostril was torn in half, and I had my lower right eyelid torn halfway off. Ended up having surgery on my eye and lip.Now other than the scar on my arm and a slight scar on my lip you car barely tell anything happened.

Took me a LONG time to like dogs again (except for cocker spaniels, the kind that bit me...I HATE those fuckers!) and I kinda freak if one jumps on me.

I hope your niece heals quickly. I remember when it happened to me....because of my stitches I was rarely allowed to go outside and play, it sucked The one upside was during recess, I got to stay in the classroom and read comics *heh*

That dog should be put down. It would be the right thing to do. Next time the next attack on someone could be fatal.

The dog that got me was put down. I don't know how it is now, but back then if an animal attacked you so bad you needed stitches it was pretty much required the animal be put down so they could test it for rabies unless the animal had up to date rabies vaccination tags.

She was moved to a ward shortly after I got there and she had the drip put in. She goes into surgery early in the morning, she was quiet for the most part but wanted to play with toys and asked her mamma to get her some chocolate

The dog was tied up outside a busy fruit and veg store and looked so friendly, scratched my sons face up a bit and the owner said the same thing "He's never done that before" All my son did was reach out a hand to pat it

my first dog was a terrier mix, very cute, and kids used to want to run at her to pet her...but some kids had teased her once, so she did not like kids. I used to have to beg people to get their kids away from my leashed dog. Especially as she got older. The only kids she liked were my sister's kids lol.

my second dog, now is a pit/boxer and he is the sweetest dog but my nephew is known to get into trouble and he used to be awful to the dogs and cats when he was little, so I keep my dog in his kennel (which he loves!) and I know if my nephew ever got bit it would because he stuck his hands in the kennel. Sometimes you just have to do what is necessary, as the relationship between dogs and kids (and also cats) can get ugly really fast.

I has a person ask me once if I thought her dog would be a good babysitter for her kids. No lie. I told her, you don't ever leave kids and animals alone together. A dog is not a babysitter! People can be so ignorant. Just like saying "my dog has never done that before." Well the man at Ft Hood had never shot up a bunch of folk either....

Anyway I am glad your niece is doing so well, she sounds like a very strong and intelligent young lady and the dog owner sounds like a fuckin' idiot. I actually don't usually blame the dog, I blame the stupid dog owner! It's a shame that people don't remember that at the end of a day a dog is still an animal. With animal instincts. And that you need to do what you can to prevent any tragedies before they occur.

I've worked with dogs and cats for over 10 years and I have never been bitten or scratched badly, mostly because I pay attention and I don't listen to stupid people who try to say how friendly their pet always is. And I have seen some vicious and scared pets!

i'm really sorry about your niece and i hope she has full recovery..., but...i don't condone euthanizing somebody's dog because of one (known) incident. my dogs have never attacked anyone, but if they did, heaven forbid, i would fight for them tooth and nail. i don't let my dogs off my property at all unless we're going to the vet. the large size of my dogs and their breed heritage rotty and bull mastiff would make them a target. kids have a nice way of wanting to pet the nice doggie, but at the end of the day, it's still an animal.

People with dogs should be more responsible if their dogs attack.
As much as I love my dog if she bit anyone she'd have to go.
That would be the hardest thing for a pet owner to do; but it would be the right thing.

The idiot needs to grow up and act more responsibly.
That the dog will definitely do it again.
