Skiing with young children I'm itching to get on the slopes again but don't know if I should wait til my kids are older. They will be aged 5 and (just) 4.
I think they'll enjoy the snow, but I don't want to waste time and money on a skiing holiday if they're not going to be old enough to learn to ski... Does anyone have any suggestions?

That's what I don't want to do. Ideally i'd like them to have ski school for a couple of hours and spend most of the time with us.
My sis-in-law took her kids a couple of years ago and the poor kids were being looked after by total strangers for pretty much the whole time. Crazy.

It kind of depends on your ability, then, and how much you want to really ski as opposed to hanging w/your kids. At that age they will most likely slow you down & get tired long before you. They're pretty young!
You can do ski school for a day, and do a day with them. Or you can split up, have someone (wife or whatever) hang w/them while some adults go off & have fun, then trade off babysitting duties. But together I wonder if ONE of you will be unhappy--either them or you--with the actual skiing. [Edited 11/11/09 13:10pm] My Legacy

Thanks.
If we go, there will be my husband and I and a couple more adults so I guess we would take turns in hanging with the kids. I think we've resigned ourselves to the fact that it won't be like our past skiing hols.

I've never tried snowboarding. I'd like to though.
The only thing that puts me off is when you get to a bit where you have to walk. On skis you can shuffle... on a snowboard you have to jump or just walk.

Oh no you don't, you take one leg out and push, kinda like a skateboard...you glide on the snow....oh and try not to crash into anybody, that can be quiet embarassing! Keenmeister

It's always looked so awkward to me Did you ski before? or just go straight in to snowboarding? Is there much difference?

Yeah, they can do it. The resort probably has a ski school that will be great for them.
Just be prepared that if you take them up the mountain with you, you might have to carry them down, or snowplow all the way down with them between your legs. Have fun!

Snowboard I want to try it. Every single skier I've ever known that tried snowboarding never went back to skis.

Moderator | Put them in ski lessons if they are beginners and keep them on the bunny hill. Most importantly make sure they wear a helmet. Helmets are becoming mandatory. Helps protect them from head/brain injury. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! I'd never thought about helmets but then I never took notice of kids skiing before. Thanks, i'll make sure they have them.
