But I think, this movie will be really good. I think it will feel like you are on a fantasy vacation if you see it in IMAX, (kind of like how I felt watching the first season of LOST). I think people will want to return over and over again to get lost in this Boris-Vallejo-colored-art come to life. I need to apply for a job working on movies like this! Just saw Avatar and loved it.
Sure, the storyline isn't exactly the most original thing in the world (and I think they gave far too much away in the trailers), but the execution of the visuals more than makes up for it. The flora and fauna of Pandora is brilliantly realized and it's virtually impossible to distiguish between what's real and what's CGI (though I'm guessing over 95% of what's on screen is CGI). I thought the humans' hardware was VERY James Cameron, owing more than a nod to Aliens in particular. But after seeing the ending, I think this was deliberate as it helps to accentuate the shift in empathy to the Na'vi (not wanting to give anything away, but when you see the showdown near the end you'll see what I mean). The 3D is brilliant, though since we've had quite a few new 3D movies recently, it's lost some of the awe of the 'new'. But again, the level of detail and realism in Avatar blows any other 3D film you've seen so far out of the water. It's never used in a gimmicky way, like 'Up' it uses 3D in a natuaral way. It just 'is' rather than tries to be. I'm sure I'll probably see it again as it really needs to be experienced on the big screen in 3D.

Just got back from it.
I go to the cinema every week, and this was the best film i've seen all year. Absolutely gorgeous to look at, it really is an eyeball fucker in 3D, the story is serviceable enough, nice flashes of humour. I felt real empathy for the Navi, i did get emotional in places, i'll admit. Beautiful. go see it.

I saw it last night. They fit over glasses. Great film. Predictable but good, and not just visually. Very good film. I enjoyed it immensely.

The script was uneven in some places, but the film is fantastic and worthy of repeat viewings. Cameron has once again proved that he's peerless.

I saw 'Up in The Air,' and after that ended there were tickets for an 11:45 showing of 'Avatar' last night. So I saw it.
I enjoyed 'Up in the Air' a whole lot more but 'Avatar' is a summer blockbuster. I guess the length and lack of repeated violence relegated it to fall. The story is the teenage love thing . . . .that wastes way too much time. It has the ecoconsciousness that I guess is supposed to appeal to some audience. Visually it's stunning, beautiful and well done. but so is 'Transformers 2.' Avatar's creativity is limited to the visuals, plot and writing are as ploddingly predictable as a Michael Bay production. Michael Bay would've tried to hide it with more explosions. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Saw it last night - it was ok - I hate 3D glassess - can't see 3D very well either - all I take away from it is a dark movie. I am going to see it in 2D and enjoy the colours etc. The film was ok - predictable and some good scenes etc.

`Avatar' Blasts Off With $232.2M Worldwide December 20, 2009 James Cameron launched his science-fiction epic "Avatar" into a safe orbit as the costly film soared to No. 1 with $73 million domestically and $159.2 million overseas, for a $232.2 million worldwide total. With that big a start, distributor 20th Century Fox was quick to proclaim it made a good investment with the estimated $400 million spent to make and market the film, which is Cameron's first narrative feature since 1997's "Titanic," the king of modern blockbusters. "Absolutely. No question," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio, which reported stellar reaction in exit polls from audiences after seeing "Avatar." "The word of mouth is something that I don't know I've ever seen in this business before." "Avatar" was a test case for the future of digital 3-D projection, which until now has been a hit with audiences mainly on animated family films. The film fell short of the record for December debuts of $77.2 million set two years ago by Will Smith's "I Am Legend." But it did break the record for a film opening in 3-D, previously held by last summer's "Up" with $68.1 million. "What they spent on this movie was totally justified, and they're going to more than earn it back," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Avatar" stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana in a love story amid human-alien conflict on a distant moon in the 22nd century. Storms on the East Coast kept many people at home, cutting into weekend movie business. http://www.google.com/hos...wD9CN6VQ01

But there were different types so no problem there. IMO, they weren't there to 'civilize' the Na'vi, they simply wanted to take the planet's resources for commercial profit. They weren't there to bring religion, medicine or cable HD. No different than we currently exploit species here on earth. We take their habitat as we will and they either move or die. I like the ode that James C. put out to some of his older films (Aliens and Terminator)....The gunships, mechs, tech, Marines(M. Rodriguez = Vasquez Reborn!!!), and overall design. Technically a well done film.
What I didn't like was the tree-hugger message. Yeah, it was the Na'avi's homeworld, they didn't want to move, so Marines made them move in so many words. I didn't see it as "evil", but the humans needed the Unobtanium. Not better than District 9, but it was a pretty enjoyable flick.

I'm just over 40 and have never seen such loveliness...the story is not original, but the visuals are masterful. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. Avatar was about 20 min too long and the plot was predictable. That aside, it was a pretty good movie and there were little reminders of European colonialism all through out the movie. Referring to the natives of Pandora "savages" and "monkeys" was something the British and the Spaniards said about Africans and South Americans when they colonized those continents.
It's easier to justify taking lands and resources of the indigenous population when you devalue them. The special effects were beyond remarkable and I didn't even get to see the 3d version. That show was sold out.
