DST is also affected by the latitude and longitude of the area you live in as well. Hawaii doesn't observe DST, but because it's out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is also situated between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, the ratio of daylight to night is about equal, so there's always around 12 hours of daylight all year long.

That's the truth about it all. It's not the time of day on the clock, it's how the earth's northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun during our winter months. It's also why Australia has summer from Sept-April, instead of winter like we do.

Don't ya'll know time is a trick? lol

You guys in the states, have it far too late in the Year. I noticed half your cities now have pre 5pm sunsets even at places with Latitudes as far south as LA. Thats crazy. Here in Auckland (Latitude 37 South) the sun never sets before 5.10pm and never rises later than 7.35am. In New Zealand Daylight savings was extended from 1st week of October to 3rd week of March to last Sunday of September to 1st sunday in April (Remember that seasons are in reverse here). So we have
2009
June 21st Shortest Day SR 7.34am Sunset 5.11pm, Daylength 9hr 37minutes
September 26th (Day b4 Daylight savings) SR 6.05 am, Sunset 6.20pm
Sep 27 (1st day of Daylight savings) SR 7.04am, Sunset 7.21pm
Now Nov 2 SR 6.14am Ss 7.55pm
Longest Day Dec 22 SR 5.58 am Ss - 8.40pm Daylength 14 hours 42 minutes
Feb 11 SR 6.47am Ss 8.22pm
April 3 (Day before switchback) SR 7.36 am (Later than midwinter) SS 7.11pm
April 4 (Standard time) SR 6.37 am Ss 6.09pm
May 2 (Our equivalent of your November 2) Sunrise 7.01 am sunset 5.35pm

So as you can see very balanced, none of this 4,25pm sunset nonsense. Its great here to have daylight savings as our mornings are quite late, even in mid summer daylight before 6am is unknown and its pitch dark by 9.30pm even in midsummer

You know, this is how you react to a lot of posts yourself.

Maybe you two should be bffs!

We've had ours for a month now and I can't stand it either. 6:30pm now and the sin is still very high in the sky.

The good thing is I don't think I'll get woken up by the wattle birds at 3:30 in the morning in summer though!

They do, Calving and Lambing runs from August to October.

I think Greenwich Mean Time was only standardised in 1880, and the world time and longitude zones were based on those.

We don't have that here, but I do have to remember that the UK does and the footy comes on an hour later in winter because it's a seven hour difference instead of six. smile

By the way, we use a six-hour system here, i.e. midnight, midnight one, midnight two etc. morning at 6 and the same again, then midday... then evening from 6pm. If I forget the correct way of saying it or if it doesn't come quickly enough I can just use the 24 hour clock. smile
