I am only a "Fam" in that I visit www.princefams.com, that's all, and that's all for most of the people over there. I eat meat, I drink, I fucking swear when I fucking want to, I don't believe in any religious bias whatsoever, I just happen to prefer Prince's music to anyone elses. Is that such a fucking pain in the ass for you Ice? is it really?

I could be wrong on this... but I got the impression that when Prince coined the term "fam" it was a roundabout attempt at some form of humility - come on, he's in his 40s now and he may feel uncomfortable with the "fan" mentality - people idolising and obsessing about one little musician from Minneapolis. You know, the people with sand-dollars and the people who spend hours on the Org talking about his arse.

"Fam" is a crap term of course, but it was probably intended to sound more like an extended family of supporters and like-thinking people rather than a throng of obsessives. Ironically of course, the only people who were actually willing to adhere to Prince's vocabulary and supplant "fan" with "fam" in conversation were the obsessives and die-hard fanatics.

Anyway, "fam" is a stupid term, but it was probably well intentioned originally but just happened to become a term to describe the very people Prince wanted to alienate.

Technically Prince did not coin the word "fam." It has been in use for years prior to that as a shortened for of family. I used it all the time in correspondence with folks... "tell the fam I said hello, etc."

And for me there is a Prince family, though it does not necessarily include everyone... but I do refer to them as fam the way I have long referred to my family as such. Never really had anything to do with Prince.
