How do you combine your clothing style with your work/profession Sup orgers?
Ive been wearing ordinary clothes and having a normal haircut for a year now, cause im looking for a job at the moment. I still see some people in my own age who dress like punk rockers, goths, etc. or just have their own style. Its a mystery to me what these people work with, if they work at all. Do you have a special style? How do you combine that with your work/profession? Freedom is to trust that you're doing what you must according to your lust

I don't think I have any style at all
I'm still a student so what I wear doesn't matter much

I work in a department store in the mall. So I dress like a saleslady at the mall. I wear saleslady shoes.

I dress like some tweedy, bespectacled college professor, which works because that's kinda where I'm headed. And when I need to get all preachermanish, I just throw this getup on over my clothes and call it a day...

I teach high school. I dress professionally- not trying to look like the kids.
I am into lots of color and funky patterns, so I incorporate that in... But I express myself mostly through my SHOES!!! I wear heels just about every day- and my shoes accent my outfits. "Love Hurts. I work for a small business and I sit behind a desk most of the time. It doesn't really matter to the owners of the business what I wear. What the hell, one of them regularly sports white.socks.with.sandals. After I saw that, I figured that no one would give half a shit what I wore. And they don't. HE'S COMING AGAIN

Hi Gimme!!
being self-employed has its benefits, however, when I'm visiting clients I try to take it up a notch to business casual. Slacks, button-down shirt, and a Blazer. When I'm doing installations its construction gear, Carhartt jeans, boots and T-shirts. and when I do have free time I wear whatever I don't mind my kids ruining... I work in a lab, away from public eye, so it doesn't really matter what I wear as long as it fits in with the safety regulations If you will, so will I

Ex-Moderator | I used to have style.
I feel like it's been zapped away in the last few years by my work dress code. Once upon a time I had a life outside of work and would go all out when dressing for dancing or clubbing or whatever party came up. Then bits of that could sneak into work ensembles, ya know? Now that I'm more of a homebody I don't bother buying clothes to go out in. So all I'm left with are boring clothes I can wear to work, clothes for exercising in and loungewear/pajamas. In all honesty it's a huge reason I want to go into business for myself. So I can wear whatever the hell I want. |

My mom (the director of the company where she works) always told me to dress for the level I want to be. However, on a non-profit salary, I find it a bit difficult to have as nice of clothes as I'd like.
My office is business casual, I'll wear jeans maybe once every two weeks, but I would never wear tennis shoes (although the Associate Director does sometimes), shorts, or flip flops. I generally wear dress pants and a sweater. I am not a fan of patterns (esp. plaid, I HATE plaid), so I stick to solids. In the past I worked at a contemporary art museum, which was totally fine with people having visible tattoos, piercings, crazy hair. Although it should be noted those people were mostly in entry level, not upper management. I have my nose pierced and I have never had a problem, but I've mostly worked in arts related nonprofits or art museums so I think it's more accepted in that type of environment. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

well, i'll be freelancing soon enough as a graphic designer, so... i'll wear whatevs i want i imagine working at a print house or graphic design company will allow me to do almost the same too once i start teaching at a university though? i probably won't change too much of what i'm wearing, i'm usually presentable i'll just have to keep the ugly sweaters at home. Do you have a special style? How do you combine that with your work/profession? Keep up the appearances like you have been. It's infinitely easier to get a job that way. Once you've GOT a job, you'll be able to tell what you can get away with and what you can't. I was manager of a movie theatres with platinum blond dreadlocks and facial piercings when I was 19. I even got away with not wearing suits, but my own funky clothes to work. It's all in how you work it in. I couldn't get away with that now. But I still stretch my company's dress code to the limits sometimes. |

Everyone at work knows I wear black every day with funky boots and silver jewelry and tattoos. I'm our magazine's art director so I'm allowed a little more freedom.

The first magazine I worked for after I graduated from college had a dress code--shirts and ties and slacks for all the men. Hated it.

The uni is pretty permissive of individual style at for teachers here. However, it's expected that you dress 'professional'--what that means, nobody has explained. I've seen professors dress slightly hipster, slightly emo, and just 'hippie'. I personally wear nice slacks, shoes, a button up shirt and a tie. My hair is a bit 'hip' but nothing crazy. Basically, my style has become more 'mature' and conservative, but oddly I'm really enjoying rockin' ties. Bottom line (and this is probably a cliche): If you place too much emphasis on your outward appearance as an expression of 'self', it's terribly boring to others. It's who you are that leaves the longest last impression. So how you look may get you hired, but who you are will keep the job.
