Anyone ever tried fasting?

Tell me about it...I tried for almost 2 days...then I felt an awful hunger pain in my stomach.

I tried a 5 day fast once. I think it was raw veggies and water on the first day, then fruit juice on the second and third and then veggies and water on the fourth and then anything on the 5th. Something like that. I was high as a kite by the third day though. It really helps though if you don't actually do much for the entire week. I liked it but maybe will not try it again.

I used to fast weekly. It was a religious thing. I always set aside one day to fast, and pray all day, off and on.

Here are some rules for fasting, whether it's a day or longer:

ALWAYS DRINK WATER. You have to be logical about it, and whether it's religious or not, God understands.

For a long term fast, lasting over a week or two, stick to juices. Not frozen or concentrate, but fresh, squeeze some orange, find some fresh apple, squeeze grapefruits, etc. You need your nutrients, regardless. Vitamins and supplements are fine, but it's okay to do a juice every day. You could also have a piece of fruit a day. Remember, you're tired after you eat because your body is using a lot of energy to digest your food. However, because things like fruits or veggies are all natural, your body expends a lot less energy, and there are great nutrients in fresh veggies and fruits.

Some fasts are nothing but grains, veggies and fruits. We're not talking whole grain bread, but actual grains like rice, barley, oats. It's up to you how extreme you wish to be.

Hunger pains are partly from your body wanting nutrients. It's lacking, and the hunger pang is your body communicating with you. That's not to say you won't have some sort of hunger pain despite having nutrients on a fast.

If you're on a long term fast, never break it by eating a huge meal. When you reach your end, and want to start eating again, have some light soup to begin with. Like maybe a chicken broth soup with some veggies in it, then work up from there. You can't dive into a steak dinner after eating nothing but fruit juices for two weeks.
NEVER fast to lose weight. 100% of the time, the weight will come back, and we know that starving one's self isn't any way to lose weight. You lose muscle, not fat.

The other pitfalls of fasting is loss of energy. You'll need to edit your activities as not to expend energy you don't have. If you're diabetic, a fast really isn't recommended at all.

Why are you fasting? If you're doing it to lose weight, it won't work. 100% FAIL on that one. If you're doing it for religious reasons, I'd stick to what I mentioned above (being of the Christian faith, but you could ask your pastor if you wanted other advice). If you're wanting to detox, you can still stick to nothing but fresh veggies (steamed or boiled), grains, and fruits. It's tough, but you can do it.

Not a fast as such but I was unhappy with my weight after 3 Yeats if drinking at uni that I exercised ridiculously hard everyday and cut my calorie intake to about 500 a day. I developed a 6 pack and was really happy with my body when I went on a Caribbean holiday.....except everybody kept staring.

It wasn't until after I relaxed the routine and looked at the holiday photos that I realised everybody wad stating because I looked lik a prisoner of war....I wad disgustinly skinny and the 6 pack was only partly down to the exercise - the rest was just nothing to cover the muscle tone

Another day or so and the hunger pains would have subsided and not eating gets way easier.

Trust me, fasting is not a good idea though.

the frist day...atleast when I tried it...was the worst...anything past that was pretty easy...but it's important to supplement your body with something while you're fasting...you at the very least HAVE to drink plenty of water...

nod Always for spiritual reasons. For a while I was doing a total fast for 24 hours every Wednesday. No food, no water. It's been a while since I've fasted like that, but I still do partial fasts. I did the Daniel Fast/ diet in Feb. 2008, for like 21 days I think.

I want to do a 40 day fast next year. God has a lot of 'splaining to do.

pray

I fasted in 2003 or 2004 for 3 days and it cured a persistent sinusitus infection. The results were almost immediate after the first 24 hours. My mucus just started changing and drying up by the end of the second day.

I kept the fast up for 5 days, and after that, it was bye-bye sinusitus.

I've fasted ever 6 months for about 3 years. After each fast, my skin cleared up, and I felt a lot better.

But, if 'cleansing' is your reasons for fasting, eating a raw/vegan diet is my now preferred way to do it, and you can sustain raw/vegan diets forever if you want. Your skin clears up and you feel reguvinated after about 3 to 4 weeks on Raw/veganism. Plus it's much better for the environment.

The last thing you undertaking a fasting regimine for is weight loss--it doesn't work. You lose muscle, and after a fast you have to get your ass in a gym and gain it back else risk having a permently slowed metabolism.

But there's alot of folks who lambaste fasting--I just personally know a lot more healthy and in shape people who occasionally fast than I do people who criticize it.

You cannot go without water. Period. People can survive for weeks without food, but only 3 or 4 days without water.

God won't come to you faster just because you're on death's door. Be logical about it.

lol yeah, I was wondering if I'm closer to the door maybe something will happen. So say I eat regular food, like rice, meat..or maybe just white rice for a week and no liquids...I won't be able too survive?

maybe you should do some reading on what fasting is for and how it is done before just assuming fasting mean starving yourself to death.

Water isn't some element that is optional in life. It's terribly UNhealthy to not drink water regularly, and not drinking during fasting is irresponsible. Be logical.

It's a cause of sacrifice. A lot of the battle in Christianity is between the flesh and the spirit. The more you feed your flesh w/ carnality, then perhaps the more your spirit man suffers. It's about balance. Feeding your spirit with scriptures, prayer, etc is what edifies it. Fasting is a way of bringing the flesh into submission in favor of feeding the spirit. However, fasting for the sake of fasting doesn't feed one's spirit by default. One has to read the scripture, pray, or whatever is in their realm of their spiritual process/regime.

It's like monk's or nun's giving up sex. Although that's a long term situation, fasting is the same idealism of personal sacrifice for God. God honors that, I believe. However, God also doesn't want his children to suffer 24/7. Being a Christian isn't about suffering all the time. It's about living a great life, being blessed, and being an example to those around you. Jesus wasn't poor, and God doesn't Christians to live in poverty either. (Of course "suffering comes in any form when we feel deprived from something we want...that goes for people dieting, etc etc).

Yes it's amazing. I've felt cleansed and clear minded. It's good to give your belly a rest from the not so friendly and nutrient dense foods you may have been injesting. It's natural to feel a hunger pang which is probably jsut some sort of withdrawal. You would feel the same way if you stopped eating a regular food for 2 or 3 days. I recommend juice fasts for two days or a one day fast of lemon water.
