Names like Geraldine, Clarance, Reginald, Marsha, Peter, Rochell. And Gertrude, Bessie, Gladys, Thelma, Otis, Bubba, etc. And don't forget the ones with two names such as Thelma Lou, Johnnie Mae, Bessie Lou, Billy Joe, Joe Bob, etc. Andy is a four letter word.

Ex-Moderator | I love old names for children. I guess I'm just odd like that. Agnes and Mabel and Vera and such.
I have recently learned that MY name is old. People don't name their kids Carrie anymore. Any place you go that has stupid stuff with kid's names on it, they NEVER have "Carrie" anymore. Not even under a different spelling. |

It would be funny if their last name was something like "Browne" tho Nikademus sounds rather an olden days name like Nostradamus or Erasmus Nikademus was my grandfather's middle name. I love the idea of giving a child that for a middle name too. It's such a beautiful name. Alas, I think I will have to settle for naming a pet after him someday. |

I was watching an old movie the other day and thought of this very thing about names!
Nobody names their kid Helen anymore.

My niece is named Mary. However, I come from an Irish-Catholic background (although the generation before me essentially left the Church so we are not religious). I can think of at least 6 Marys in my family, and all of them are referred to with their middle names as well (Mary-Claire, Mary-Lourdes, etc). I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

Here's the interesting thing about that.....some of those old school names, that were more popular in the 50's or 60's, seem to be making a come back. I think people FINALLY (thank GOD) got tired of the blond and brunette plethora of Britney's, Amber's, Megan's (Meagan, Mehgan, Meaghan, Meighain, etc), Tiffany's, etc etc. I love that even stars are naming their kids simple names like Jack or whatever. Listen, I'm the first person to know about rare names. I've only met 2 or 3 other people named Ernest in my life, and I'm 41, although I don't think many people are going to use the name Ernest anytime soon.
Although I vowed never to have kids, part of me wants to have a son to carry the name on. I'm the fourth in line with my name, my great-grandfather being the first to have it, then my granddad, then my father, and now me. I always joked that "the fourth" was Greek for "The Last", but now I kind of want Ernest V.

Helen is my grandma's name. Here are some old names (my grandparents and their siblings): Helen Jo Roberta Lucille Ruby Pearl Florence Wilma Eldon Dale Dwight Wilbur Henry John Fred Loren Lloyd Leonard argh...my paternal grandpa had one more sister, but I can't remember her name... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

When I was in college, there was a girl in my sorority who was one of several sisters from an Irish-Catholic family. All of the girls in the family were named Mary - Mary Sue, Mary Beth, etc. I thought that was some weird shit. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
