I have a bunch of little things I've inherited from various aunts and uncles and grandmas They aren't replaceable, but I don't think they are valuable or rare or collectable, they just remind me of my family and I have spent many nice moments wondering about it. I'm just like my favourite auntie, a collector of miniatures, and in 1992 she opened up her little box of treasures and let me choose some to take home. When my niece is 21 I might let her take some of mine too, should she be that way inclined! Or girl grandchild.

My car. It's all mine (my daughter drives her jeep) so it has only my personal touches therein - my string of pearls that hangs from the rearview mirror, my CDs in the changer...It's so comfortable to me and more than just transportation, it's my lair on wheels.

sentimentally/personally precious:
*a particular letter from when i was a baby *my diplomas, especially the one from graduate school *a plant from my grandfather's funeral (from when i was in high school) *my art collection monetarily precious: *my prince vinyl and cd collection *all of my art history books/exhibition catalogues The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Interesting question. Those of us who've had to evacuate ahead of a hurricane know for sure what's the most precious, because that's what we put in the car to take with us.
Pretty much everyone I know took photographs, which represent memories, so I would say memories are our most precious possessions. Other than that, I would say my Bible (it was my mom's) and my guitars.

I guess if I look at it that way the only thing I'd bring along other than the usual needed things (my kitties, my iPod, change of clothes, etc.) would be my laptop. But that's probably mostly cause it's the most expensive thing I own and therefore most expensive to replace. I'm not sure it would even occur to me to grab the tote I have full of photos and such. |

It would, I promise. If you thought that there was a chance your house, and everything in it, could get destroyed, you'd think of those pictures in a heartbeat. Even though I've lived in Houston all my life, Hurricane Rita in 2004 was the first time I'd ever evacuated, and that was because of what had happened with Katrina a month before. When it was all over, it was amazing that pretty much everyone I talked to all said the same thing - we took our pictures with us. Other documents like wills, deeds, car titles, etc. were also on everyone's list.

I'm finding more and more that I can't live without my cell phone. Between the couple thousand songs I keep on it, my calendar and phonebook, the numerous, invaluable GPS apps I use everyday and the internet access, I'd be lost without it.

Yeah, it's definitely something I plan on investing in. I inherited a great set of Calphalon pans when I moved in with Chris; before I'd been using a ragtag bunch of secondhand aluminum crap. And this past Christmas he bought me a set of Global knives, which have changed my life in the kitchen more than anything else to date. I need more quality baking pans: loaf pans, muffin tins, cake pans, baking sheets, etc. I baked bread last night but had to do the loaves one at a time in my one loaf pan. And different sizes of cast iron pans, and a grill pan. And a pastry cutter. Some ramekins would be nice, and a mallet/tenderizer is definitely needed. I've been pounding chicken breasts with my fists. You cook too??? I bought a whole bunch of Le Creucet pots and pans at the outlet store. I love their colors and the price was good for those. I've had 'em three years and ain't never used ONE of 'em. I'm truly a lazy ass.

When I bought mine I got a set for my sister too. She loves them and says they make the best rice. Too bad my shit's still got tags on it. [Edited 10/26/09 13:34pm]

My laptop and wardrobe. I'm pretty much systematically getting rid of everything else.
Laptop? I'm gaining an aversion to "stuff" in my old age, and I've managed to condense darned near my entire logistical life -- important documents, contact info and remote correspondences, media library, academic and vocational-related items, etc. -- to my computer and a couple backup hard drives. It's just become really important. Wardrobe? Well, I'm increasingly minimal elsewhere. I figure this is one area where I'll allow myself to indulge yet. [Edited 10/26/09 19:49pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I have a soda cup cover from McDonalds or someplace like that. It's the top...u know what I'l talking about...but it's in the shape of Watto from Star Wars. It's one of those collectors things. I klnow it aint "valuable" or nothing, but it's valuable to me. My BESTESTSESTEST friend ever got it for me. I'll keep it for forever. Around his neck is a set of canadian dog tags with "Hear" on Them. Sammi got me those. I have a Willie Dixon 12" record. Mighty Earthquake and Hurrican...that's a recent find. My FAVORITE i guess U could say is a mini mini arcade version of Don key Kong Jr. arcade game thing. It' got an LCD screen a joystick and a jump button...it's awesome
watto cup is just like the one in this pic...but it's not attached to a car. this is the game thing I was talking about
