I think I just ruined the cable guy's day

we just got a plasma this week and naturally want to watch it in HD. Dish network sent over their guy and he reluctantly went over our options - and to his dismay, yes, we do want local channels in HD. He's going to have to put up another dish pointing due east. Sigh. Alright, he said, I'll get that started. Sigh. neutral

It's not warm out but it's not raining either. Not yet anyway.

Dude came dressed in a lightish windbreaker. I gave him the bad news and he zipped it up to the neck. Nothing like coming prepared!

alot of people have shitty jobs, no doubt...but some make their job shittier with their attiudes about it...I mean, the guy installs for DISH Network, did the concept of actually installing dishes escape him??

everybody has bad days, but if his day was so bad that it reflected on his customer service, then he should take the day off and go buy his own damn beer....biggrin

Well, if he does a good job, at least give him a nice tip.

A few years back our water heater busted, and we ordered a new one (incl. installation) from Home Depot. I made sure to go over the size and model # with the cashier b/c the previous day Lowes showed up with a unit that was too big.

So the guy shows up with the wrong unit. Too big. He tells us that he needs to come back Monday. It was Friday and we were going away. The Home Depot is 5 minutes away.

I got on the phone with the Corporate office and firmly demanded that they get the guy to take his fat ass down the street, pick up the right model, and come back the same day.

Within an hour the guy was back.

Fortunately for him, he did a good job AND it was hot as HELL that day (no a/c in the tiny little room he was working in) so we wound up giving him a tip.

he just left. Once he finished the nasty bit of being in the wind outside, he cheered up a bit and was a little chatty and helpful. And he left me with H-FUCKING-D tv and that was pretty awesome of him!

Still, he apparently has been doing this for 6 years, 12 months of the year and in Wisconsin he's gotta know it gets pretty flippin cold out there. Cable guys...not always the sharpest tools I've noticed. But whatever.

btw - if you deal with Dish Network ever - they are completely awesome on the phone, so nice and all about customer satisfaction. I talked to a woman in SE Texas yesterday and could've sworn it was Loni Love. She was so damn funny biggrin

I guess I see it a lil' differently...imo, if he does a good job, then hey...he finally did his job

if he had started out with a decent attitude and atleast acted like he gave a damn, then we could talk about a tip biggrin

I agree!!

Dish Network has always given me great customer service, I recommend them to everybody...

Direct TV, on the other hand, can kiss a fat babys ass....it's almost like they try to be as unhelpful and inconvenient as possible...

Especially when you call over the phone and try and get help, they charge for one of their workers to come out and fix the problem disbelief

I hate 'em...shitty, shitty company
even after you upgrade and tell them you want the service plan to avoid service call costs and somehow that slips thru the cracks and is never appplied to your account...then when you have issues with your hd and try to schedule a service call, they inform you that you don't have the service plan and that it will be an out of pocket expense

my bad for not noticing it wasn't applied to my account...their bad for not giving me what I asked for...god knows everything else that cost extra money was applied...

I just got DirectTV installed Wednesday. My local cable
company started to smell themselves. They've grown and got
offices all over the damn place and decided to screw their
customers by rearranging the programming on basic cable from
72 channels to 22 so you would have to purchase the digital
broadcast tier to view some decent programming. I said screw
you. I'm paying DirectTV half of what i was paying my local
cable company. They started to become another Time Warner. mad

was this a mistake? so far we're pretty happy with it. I am a little paranoid about burn-in problems, but from what I've heard it's fairly uncommon

I didn't even get this tv for tv watching, believe it or not. We're trying to improve the decor around here and something absolutely, positively had to be done about the 20 year old console clunker we've had for years. The new tv and cabinet look fabulous if nothing else biggrin

Did you compare LCD vs Plasma?

I have neither. The 27" Magnavox that my wife & I got for out wedding 13 years ago is still going strong. But when it goes, we're splurging on a big wall-mount baby!

Anyway - I had heard that plasmas have a short life span and that you can't watch newshows like CNN or MSNBC with those "tickers' at the bottom because they burn into the screen.

Is any of that true? Because plasmas have really nice pictures IMO.

Plasmas are great. They provide excellent black levels and off axis viewing which can be an issue with LCDs. They also don't get the motion blur and dead pixels that are inherent problems with LCDs. Plasmas have been around since the 1970s and like CRTs, most sets will outlast their obsolescence.

A Plasma does have to be seasoned before watching shows with static images, station logos and tickers. You just need to run a full screen continuous motion picture on it (like a DVD on repeat) for the first 100 hours and you're golden.
