As 4LOVE said, it's a long, painful, ugly, and horrible way to go. I would certainly not pick this as my choice of death, and therefore do not smoke.

I don't mean to preach, but...

My grandfather started smoking as a young teenager. He quit in 1987, at the age of 70, but it was too late. He died of lung cancer in 1998, and the doctors were pretty sure that his smoking was the cause of it.

Eventually it got to the point where he was pretty much told, "There's nothing more we can do for you. Get your bags packed, because you've got about a month left to live."

During the time period when he knew he was going to die of lung cancer, he said words to the effect of, "I wish I had never started."

I do not support the so-called "War on Drugs" or prohibition, but it amazes me that tobacco remains a legal drug while other substances that are less harmful can get you prison time. But this state (and others) are addicted to the tax revenue from cigarettes--I know Indiana recently jacked up the tax by something like 50 cents per pack in order to help fix our state's budget deficit.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

The government in England is pretty fucked too. I mainly wanna quit cos I dont like using government endorsed drugs. How can I trust a government who gains profit from a drug that does nothing but kill. Cannabis is the way forward, alcohol causes nearly as much violence as religion these days. I never heard of a stoned guy beating up his wife after a spliff nod

hehe.

Havnt smoked since starting this thread. wink

Anyone else wanna join me??

Consider this: If you were stranded on a desert island where there was no tobacco...would you be climbing the walls, white-knuckling, dealing with an inner struggle? No...

If I were stranded on a desert island right now without any tobacco, I WOULD be climbing the palm trees and freaking out all over the place. I nearly had a break-down at my parent's over Xmas as I try not to smoke around them and I will NOT smoke at all if my neices are present. But that's the addiction, not necessarily an inner struggle about wanting to quit. I get completely erratically emotional.

On another note, I've been psyching myself up to quit for the last few weeks. I think February's my month!!

You will need to find something in your life to replace smoking with. I chose running, but I do propose that you find some kind of healthy excercize to keep yourself motiviated. Perhaps Jazzercize big grin Plus this helps with any weight gains that may result initially from quitting. Remember this; being overweight is healthier then smoking.

But then again quit at your own pace and your own time because otherwise it's not going to take.

I quit in August and only a few times have I wanted to smoke. An old college buddy was in town during Christmas and when went over to City Billiards. He didn't know I quit and asked me for a cigarette (He doesn't smoke except at bars) and for some reason when he asked I severely wanted to smoke. I didn't smoke any that night and haven't had an urge since then either. Like I said 99.9 percent of the time I don't miss it and I smoked a pack a day for a decade. It's very complicated I guess.

A friend of mine is actually getting me a free 30 day membership to her gym. I'll most likely be joining full time after that. Jazzercise, here I come! lol

Therapy

Planning. That is the key.

Go to a Boots store and get their 'Pro Change Programme'. Believe my friend, with that and some kind of NRT, piece of piss.

You might try to catch a cold, a big one, so you're having trouble breathing, so it's making you cough your lungs out if you smoke. Throw away your cigarettes. Try to maintain the cold for about 3 weeks. That's 3 weeks not smoked then. After it's over, don't buy new cigarettes, don't ask them from someone else et voila.

Did you jinx me or something???

lol, I have a stinking cold this morning. Even the thought of a ciggarette makes me feel worse

Addiction is NOT a disease. It's a choice.

How do you know it's not a disease?

Unless they make babies now that are born with a cigarette in their mouth, or that, say, grow out of their body once they reach puberty, I'd say it is a choice.

lol I have a picture of myself when I was like 6 months old with a cigarette in my hand. That's what you get when your parents are too young when they have you big grin
