I think Blair Witch was genius, but I do think Paranormal Activity is really good, not as original and scary as Blair Witch, it's more Hollywood (or should I say Japanese?) in it's flavor of scare, but the movie is done really well. I saw it twice with different groups of friends in completely packed theatres, and no one in the audience seemed disappointed. One guy behind us couldn't stop talking nonsense loudly throughout because he was nervous and scared. And even he screamed at one part.

People that don't like Blair Witch probably process films in a different way than people that do. You have to ask yourself do you like modern art at a museum or classic paintings? It might be an indicator of how you will also appreciate a movie that breaks normal convention to attempt to create a new mood.

Do any of you who hated Blair Witch understand what you are seeing at the end? With the guy standing in the corner?

The ending of Blair Witch freaked me out because I knew that the wich was making the man stand in the corner.

I'm a huge fan of blood and guts but it was refreshing to just see something that was spooky and creepy.

Every other horror movie out, IMO, is very predictable. Paranormal Activity, not so much.

You got it! You had to realize in a split second what that meant to see him standing in the corner based on what was discussed earlier in the film. The movie rocked the theatre I saw it in. I heard whimpers when they just showed the house standing there at night. I do think there are two types of thought patterns that these "realistic" movies bring out as inherent in viewers. You either got Blair Witch or you didn't. Because of how you process stuff in your mind.

Same could be said for Prince music!

shrug Or maybe you got it and thought it sucked. Or maybe you didn't get it but got caught up in the intense emotional reaction in the theatre--nervous, heart racing, palms sweaty, maybe even laughter--and enjoyed the social interaction and collective responses on y'alls nervous systems. But you are correct, it's up to you whether you enjoy it or not. Just becuase you like one ghost story doesn't mean you will like any ghost story.

Roger Ebert summed up Blair Witch best:

http://rogerebert.suntime...60301/1023

The film got rave reviews. I guess they all were hoodwinked. I blame stupid moviegoers and their need to always see things explode, constant action, cgi inanity. The public needs an enema.

Ebert gave it 4 stars, the users on the website gave it 3. comfort If sticks and stones and having to stand in the corner makes you shit your pants then shrug no harm done.

It works alone too for me. As a matter of fact I watch movie alone all the time, and watch them and parts of them over and over to figure out what it is that is catching me. I even watch movies with no volume to see just the visual effect and patterns sometimes. Blair Witch was good for me because it set up a lot of factors that rang true, and then very realistically made the real environment close in on the characters with no hope, and then at the conclusion, if you made the connection to the earlier story of what it means to see someone standing in the corner, it was as if the witch materialized in your mind, much more effectively than seeing some special effect. But that's me and my mind.

PS, I was BORED by most of "Zombieland". I also liked "Deathproof" much more than "Planet Terror" in the theatre. So I don't always get caught up in the audience/public reaction.

But, I did have very good friends of mine who couldn't get into "Blair". Now that "Paranormal" is not cool anymore and got it's wide release and publicity, I wonder if some people will not get into it as well.

Blair Witch was a HUGE let down. Not scary at all. I was excited to see PA in theaters until I read a lot of reviews online. I think I'll pass.
look for blair witch
walk in woods
walk in woods
walk in woods
lose map
cuss
i kicked the fucking map in the river
cuss/cry/whine
put some rocks in front of tent
walk in woods
holler off camera
run with camera on shoulder
put stick people in trees
run with camera on shoulder
run into run down house
run around run down house with camera
stand in corner
get knocked down
CUT!

falloff Basically! And a lot of reviews stated that the PA trailer already shows you all of the supposedly scary parts. neutral I'll wait for the DVD.

I don't think it worked as well as BWP, because everything in PA is very literal--you always know exactly what's going on. Whereas in BWP, you were like, what the hell did I just see and then you mind filled in the blanks.

And the end of PA was horrible

[SPOILER COMING]

why would she actually bite the camera?!

They TOTALLY could've left that last nano-second out. All the other "horror" movies are doing that.

PanthaGirl

I love Blair Witch it was quite original for its time and it proved that gore and traditional horror was completely unecessary to broadcast true terror.

I will watch Paranormal Activity because as I stated on another thread it seems to be like a fictional version of Most Haunted or Ghosthunters, but will wait for the dvd release.
