Zombie Kitty, your USB devices should show up in the finder with an eject option if there is no desktop icon. Resetting the PRAM is really awkward. lol I've actually set small objects on the keys to assist me when doing this. It's not a bad idea to reset the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM once in a while anyway.

If you click on this guy mac and under "devices" there is something with an upside-down triangle and a line underneath, it's ejectable (click on the triangle). If there is nothing there, then there is not enough power draw from the headphones to worry about it. Sort of like a mouse or keyboard, where you can remove them at will. Your Mac hiccup was probably related to something else.

All OSes have their problems.

Once you've gotten your 2-3 work related programs installed, the family photos / illegal mp3s / pdf's you're never going to read put all in their respective folders and your favourite porn streaming site bookmarked, you should never do any changes on their configurations.

eek

Boot the Mac while holding down Shift. This will run a disk repair utility. Reboot.

(Skip this step if Mac boots OK) Install OS DVD. Boot the Mac while holding down C. Go through the steps just short of doing an install. Run Utilities and Repair Disk Permissions.

Try resetting your SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806

Then check and repair your permissions. Don't do this from your install DVD unless you absolutely have to.

It would not start with shift and would not start with option

It's gone to the shop today.

I've still got 18 months of applecare left. This is second time it's gone to get fixed, last time it was the graphics card in April. The G5 I had before (one year out of applecare needed a new logicboard, so I got this mac pro)

My 7300 was perfect for 10 years, they just don't make them like they used to.

Wow. That sucks. Good thing you have the warranty. Are these Macs being exposed to unusual amounts of radioactive isotopes? Because that'll do it.

Hope you have a second computer in the house so you can continue your work. If you don't have one, perhaps for situations like this it could be useful just to have some old PC that friends / relatives have given away for you for free or something. Just have something like paintshop pro / gimp or whatever installed on it. I've always had plenty of spare parts in the house for these type of situations, although in case of Macs you might just a need to use another computer altogether for a while.

You have to pull the USB cable out at just the right time. Before the data stream comes gushing out.

not yet, I dropped it in on Friday afternoon, they close over the weekend, so I'm waiting around for their call to find out what's happening sigh the technician said very helpfully it could be a very minor thing, or something BAD, and parts may have to be ordered from Sydney mad
