Sex exists for the sole purposes of reproduction, from your DNA's point of view. For men, spraying it all over the galaxy ensures that some of his DNA will make it. It's a real force. Women, because they tend to stay with the children did not ever evolve this tendency, but instead evolved the tendency to be very selective (sometimes).

I like ya, Teller, but you Evolutionary Biologists try to use the past to explain everything! lol I know the basis for much of human behavior is still the same, but millions of years have passed and things are different. Our abilities to act using reason as opposed to instinct have increased to an incredible extent.

I"m not saying it's right or wrong to be monogamous or non-monogamous, I'm just saying we have control, and anyone who uses their biology as a defense for doing something they know is against what they've promised--it's a copout (unless they truly have neurological/brain chemistry malfunctions).

No, I'm saying (pretty clearly, in fact, lol) we have evolved a tremendous amount from that point and we don't have to do it anymore. Like eating meat, for example. I eat it, but I don't try to say I have to or I'm totally programmed and have no control over eating it. smile

This goes back to why is it not the norm? Why is it so common? Why are people like Moonbeam rare? (hugs to Moonbeam)

It seems you and IceNine believe it's just based on what is around us. I say nature wins 9 times out of 10, regardless of our ability to make the right choices.

We have the power of reason--but look around at the general population and tell me a good number of people won't succumb to their urges?

Wet-dreams and hard-ons come from basic biological processes and hormonal development and are largely confined to adolescence. Nocturnal emissions are relatively rare outside of early sexual development and wet dreams in adults are nothing more than a mental expression of internal desires. Wet dreams have nothing to do with monogamy, nor do adolescent developmental processes.

The only point I am trying to make is it is intended, to me, that men are sexually able to reproduce, early and often. Nature brings this into their world without asking for it. It comes, so to speak.

It fills a man's mind with sexual thoughts and desires. All meant to keep humans reproducing.

I guess I am going to quit debating this issue, as we clearly disagree.

I think monogamy is the norm in our culture, but not until a certain picking/sorting process has been accomplished. I also think that "the norm" is, to a large extent, socially constructed. Maybe our definitions of monogamy are different--I'm thinking of "not cheating on your partner". Maybe you're thinking of "having one and only one partner ever in your lifetime"?

You are correct in my definition of monogamy as being "having one and only one partner". I mean, I could be monogamous with 50 in my lifetime, right? biggrin

This was fun, I saw you need to get to work, lol...enjoy your day!

Since humans are animals, I would not argue that people were not meant to reproduce as animals. What I am arguing, however is that humans are far more complex social beings then animals and we NEED a solid structure in which to raise children, therefore monogamy is actually a characteristic that will lead to the betterment of humankind.

Monogamous can also be defined as: "The practice or condition of being married to only one person at a time."

I don't know, but there are certainly places where you can have many... hell, I believe that Mormons dig polygamy right here in the good old USA.

I believe you are right, I've seen a few documentaries on it. I'm way to jealous to share. It seems some can.

This sort of branches out your question. Do you think the only reason these men who enjoy the bragging, is that each woman is not in the face of the other?

You have a good point... I don't think that men would really brag about it in front of a bunch of women, especially those that they have actually had sexual contact with. It is easy to boast on the internet... hell, I could say that I am Prince on the internet for that matter but someone would immediately call me on it in person.

You're damned right! Take the number of women the average guy claims to have been with and divide it by ten and you will still probably be too high.

They actually haven't changed as much as you claim and be able to be monogamous has little to do with being highly evolved or not. In hunter-gather societies, where the people are just as evolved as us, a woman may be married many times before she finally settles down with one man and even when she does, she will still have affairs outside of her marriage. Men will also do the same thing. Does it cause personal conflict, yes but it is also the way that most people maximize their reproductive advantage. Considering that this behavior is cross-cultural makes it look as though it has something do with human nature and less with human nurture.

Now, women being considered whores for not remaining virgins and men being considered studs for the same reason is a social construct since it is definitely not found cross culturally. If you want some interesting reading on this subject I suggests Mother Nature by Sarah B. Hrdy (yes, that it Hrdy, not Hardy) and Nisa by Marjorie Shostak (her last name may be spelt wrong).

What about guys who constantly claim that they are the hottest thing going? What do you think there?

Since I already posted off topic, i figured that I should also answer the question.

Men who do this are just very insecure and probably have perfromance anxiety. I don't find it an attractive trait because it makes me think about all the possible children and diseases he may have. barf
