Ever hit someone while driving? What did you do?

Inspired by Supernova's resolution (in jest we pray) re: driving her car around corners upon crossing pedestrians... and 4Loves resolution to drive away smile

http://www.prince.org/msg...msg_410182

Did you ever have a fender bender? Bump someone? Crash you car? (Nothing serious please... I've had my share of posting morbid memories boxed )

I remember the first time I got my license, my mother sent me to the grocery. I was too happy to be driving, had the music blasting (I will always blame the music... as though the volume somehow disrupts my concentration) and as I was turning into a parking spot I failed to clear the front and ran right into an old station wagon. Big ol thing with the wooden lookin panels... it started shaking, and I started sweating. omfg I mean I just got my license. I don't need this shit.

Of course when you hit someone's car, if they're not there, your supposed to leave a note "I hit you and here's my contact info." Well I was 16, and was like phuckalldat... I saw a little boy wave walking towards the car pointing out to his momma that the car was shaking, and I backedaphuckup and high tailed it outta there. innocent

In retrospect, it was probably just a bump. But I sure didn't wait to find out.

I was going 2 an audition 4 this band... I was pretty buzzed, because the audition happened 2 fall on the day that me and my coworkers happen 2 hit the club after work...

Anyway... (by the way, this was years ago... as if that's an excuse!!!) It was raining HARD... and I had this '83 Toyota Turcel... with a racing stripe...and all that crap!

Anyway...I bumped this guy on the 54east (in San Diego)...he was driving a Bug, and it dent his fender 2 where his wheel was rubbing. I stopped, pouring rain, and helped him pull his fender from his tire. We were exchanging info, (as required by law) and at the last minute, I changed the last number of my phone and license plate.

I never heard from him again.

I still laugh when I think of it... lol

But, I still look around my shoulder 2... angel

I did, this past September.

I was driving an 1986 Mazda 626 joogie, that was dangerous to drive (the rack and pinion wasn't working right).

The Saturday before it happened, I was quite afraid of driving it, but hey, it's all I had.

The week was dry, and not a cloud in sight. The day of the accident, it was raining cats and dogs, and altough the car didn't have a stereo/radio, I still couldn't hear anything but the rain.

I am driving, about 10-15 mph (residential area), and so is everyone else - it seemed. Green lights all over the place, when suddenly this old 1/2 ton pick-up truck right in front of me, comes to a dead stop, right before the intersection. I slam my breaks, the steering doesn't turn...bam, I rear-end him. A fire-truck had run the red light. The car is totalled, because the right side went completely into the tire, and the car just wasn't worth fixing.

He comes out of the car, and tells me he knows it isn't my fault. I tell him that I want to settle this today, and I call him later and offer him $500. I drew up a contract, claiming no injury on his or my part, that we cannot sue each other in the future for anything resulting from the accident, and he comes over later and signs it.

I felt 100% normal that day...two days later...omg I am still suffering from what I think is whiplash.

sigh

Once I hit a parked car from behind. But I was in the process of backing up and pulling forward to get out of a cramped parking space, so at the speed I was going I knew there would only be minor scrapes, if at all. I didn't see any damage at all, but it's probably because I hit the non-metal part of the bumper. This guy in the parking lot stared at me, and I stared back. eek

Another time years ago I was using my mother's big old Chevy Impala (1968 car) to go to and from work. My car was in the shop getting worked on. So I'm at work in the parking garage. And...you know, old Impalas are BIG cars. So I'm parked in a space that I shouldn't have parked in. I should have parked in a space where it was gonna be less congested (when I got there not many cars were around this specific area), but I didn't, and when I got into the car to come home, as I was driving out I didn't drive out of the space far enough before making the turn, and I scraped either a truck or a van as I came out. Turned out all of the damage (that I could see) was done to the Impala. A dent in the door. I paid for the body work repair.

I've been hit from behind a few times while on the street and freeway with my own car.

Heheh.

See after I bumped someone on the road (I'm a really safe good driver though really. Really.

For real.

Okay...)

I was driving fast, late to a class. It was raining so what do they call it, hydroplaning? When the rain water forms a layer on the road so its esp slippery. Well I was driving fast in Georgetown, DC... very ritzy neighborhood... and I couldn't stop in time so I bumped this Mercedes Benz.

I was like awww daym! omfg

This is it. The bumper on the Benz alone could probably cost more than my hooptie. So I'm sitting there thinking how am I gonna kiss this driver's ass and try to get out of it.

Lady gets out walks up to me and nicely says "Young man, you need to slow down. That's it. That's all I want to tell you. I'm fine, and I'm sure my car is fine. But let this be a lesson to you."

I was "yes ma'ammin" my ass all the way through. If she had asked me to do a jig I would have cuz I did NOT need this. After she said "now you drive safely" and I drove away, I just knew that I had been touched by the Fairy Godmother of the Road angel who protects accident victims and drivers.

A few years later, someone would run into me the same way during rain. Dude was sweatin bullets when I got out to check my car... I looked saw nothing was wrong, felt fine, and gave him the okay. He looked like he would have cried.

Ever since then I believe in karma and am a SAFE DRIVER innocent smile

Until I learned my lesson, it was very very good to have an uncle that owned a body repair shop so I could encourage my victims evillol to get their cars fixed there without reporting it to my insurance. I think I still have a tab with my uncle, too.

But again, that's in the past. I am really a safe driver now. innocent

I haven't hit anything or anyone while driving for more than 20 years. But back in the day, I proved more than once that teenaged drivers are more dangerous than Mr.Magoo.

For starters, I hit a pedestrian once. I was 16. Not sure how old he was. I caught him by surprise in a sidewalk on a rainy night. He flipped onto the ground, rolled around a few times, stood up, and to my amazement, ran away. I stopped the car, yelled after him if he was okay (he seemed okay to me), and I then drove off into the night.

Another time, a drunk bicyclist crossed my path on a busy expressway. He went down HARD. Damned bicycle dented the front of my car. The rider rolled off of my hood and landed near my driver's door. He was dazed. I was kinda pissed. The cops showed up on this one, and I was exhonerated. The cyclist was drunk, blew a red light at the intersection, and he was the one cited.

Despite that early bad luck, things have been great since. When I think back and realize that I was given an unrestricted driver's license at the age of 15yrs, I am aware of how CRAZY that was. I'm convinced, there is NOTHING on the road more dangerous than a 15 year-old in control of a car.

Daym that sounds funny picturing it... but I think I would have peed myself or worse if I ever hit a person and had them flip and roll and what not. Whoa!

How many tickets have you guys gotten?

I've had exactly 3 in all my years of driving. And they all came within 1 year.

One for speeding (I was).

One for only slowing down at a stop sign. It was a short pause instead of a stop. It was a very small 3-way intersection - no other car was around! mad

And the last one a cop totally LIED and said I didn't stop at a stop sign. This time I did stop. It must have been during the time they have to give their quota of tickets out.

All that was during the year 1991. Haven't had a ticket since then. Sometimes I still drive fast, but never reckless.

My mom has been driving for 36 years and she has never gotten a ticket.

My little sister, on the other hand, rear-ended an SUV and racked up 3k worth of damage on our car two months after she got her license. My parents haven't let any of us drive since then!

Besides parking tickets which come a dime a dozen in New York mad , I have only gotten one ticket for a moving violation: $100 for running a red light... well I made a right turn as the yellow was turning red, and there's no right turn on red in the City.

Hadn't had my license a week b4 i ran in2 the parked car of my neighbor upstairs ... Me being the geek that i am, i left my name and number on the windshield, offered 2 pay whatever 2 get it fixed, and gave her the $1000+ that next night ... this incident happened in '97 ... saw that heffa 2nite and the little fender bender in her bug still ain't fixed, but she got some fly azz clothes! confused ... If i see her again, it's gonna be a misunderstanding ... understand this. eek j/k

On the literal tip, my mom hit me this summer while i was trying 2 teach her how 2 drive (she's 60+ mind U) ... Homegirl drove in2 a ditch at the park ... i got out and walked in front of the car (smart, i know) & tried 2 direct her 2 back up ... She panicked, put the car in DRIVE (by mistake hmm ) and rammed over my azz. nuts ... At this point the park rangers are eyeing us like "look at these damn fools here," so i jumped up, waved my arms up & down & in front 4 her to stop, finally got her 2 slowly back out, and hopped in2 the car ... i'm shaking and panting, she's a total wreck ("AW LAWD, JESUS. LAWD HAVE MERCY") ... and after a moment, i bust out laughing! (thinking of how ridiculous we looked) & she's looking at me like hmm "Aw lawd, I done knocked the sense clean on outta my baby's head" ... Anyway, a sprained leg & 7 months later, da woman still ain't got her dang license!

Never any serious accidents, thank GOD pray But hitting someone is my worst fear. I was driving a bit too fast down a residential one day (years ago) & a kid darted out into the street from between parked cars - no way I could see him in advance, blah blah blah. I hit the breaks as he sort of fell in the street & rolled - another 2 inches & I would have at least crushed his foot omfg That scared me shitless, I'm so much more careful now but the possibility of hurting that kid still haunts me.

3-5, can't remember. 2 for bullshit violations (I drove through a barely marked bus zone & was in it for all of 30 seconds neutral), at least 2 for speeding, all spread out over the 15 years I've been driving. I know I've been to traffic school at least 3 times sad But once my sister had to go too so we went together, which was cool biggrin

i had to reply to this ..

i have never hit another person/car ..

but i will tell u what its like to be hit, eyeing a couple of fellow orgers with suspician. n planning on keeping his distance from em.

i have been run over 4 times that i can remember, could be more .. i kid u not..

and i have been hit twice seriously on my bike. not counting litle scrapes and bumps.

i wont bore u with all the details, but lets just say .. it hurts like hell. and in my case i am so mad i advise the driver to drive away, before i do something that's gonna land me in jail.

luckily i am a tough lil boy and have took the pain with little injury in most cases..

but some drivers need to open they eyes ..

that's fo sure

Whoa stepinrazor that's pretty shitty. I'm sorry!

Three of my aunts (all my mom's sisters) have been hit one time or another by a car while riding bikes. One of my aunts was in a coma for a week. They all thought she was going to die but she came out allright. biggrin

Also... one of my aunt's Huskies was run over by a snowplow in the winter a few years back (she lives in Kirkwood). She said there wasn't much left to bury. ill

So be careful when you drive, people! no no no!

Bikers catch holy hell around here. I feel
for them. That "give bikes the right" campaign
is just not working.

Thankfully, I haven't hit any. And have only
hit one car--when I first got my license. Just
a fender kiss, but enough to teach me to pay
close attention to the road when behind the
wheel.
