It doesn't happen here in this part of the World so I've never understood the significance behind it.

Like most North American holidays, Hallowe'en began life as a Christian holy day (in spite of what certain Christian fundamentalists will tell you to the contrary about it being a day of devil worship or whatever) that's meaning and celebration has shifted dramatically over time.

That said, when you compare to the other two big Christian-based holidays, Christmas and Easter, Hallowe'en actually retains more of its holy symbols and significance than either of those days do, albeit in a strange and silly way.

Trick or treating is believed to have begun because the day before All Saint's Day, or All Soul's Day was supposed to be the day when the veils between our world and the demon world dropped. To appease demons, people would leave offerings of food or money (treats) outside their homes in hopes they'd be left alone. Those that didn't would be punished. (tricks)

I wouldn't mind the teenagers that much if they bothered to make an effort to dress up!

We get these big goofy teens walking around "trick-or-treating" with nothing more than a hooded sweatshirt. I guess the hood up is a costume?

I give them like, 1 piece of candy (as opposed to 5 or 6 the little kiddies get).

This thread reminds me of something that happened to me when I was 10 years old. I was trick or treating on Halloween, like I usually do. I went to the house of a neighbor's on my rounds. I said my usual, "Trick or treat", when I stepped onto the porch, and the woman who lived there opened the door. She said to me something like, "Well, Nancy, aren't you a little bit old to be trick or treating?" omfg pissed I remember getting really angry, looking at her and saying, "I'm only 10 years old!!" She didn't say anything else, guess I told her, the stupid bitch. lol lol This woman was a real pain in the ass, and wanted to know what everybody was doing at all times. One of my brothers even said they once saw her looking out her front window with binoculars! disbelief lol
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

There is no age limit. Even adults go to clubs dressed up etc.

My parents discontinued my trick or treating at age 12 sigh I had to rely on my baby sister who sometimes would say no sad , and I would have to resort to pretend bawl and she would feel sorry for me and give me a shit load of candies cool . That trick worked for 2 years smile after that she did not fall for it anymore mad

Same here. My nephew is going to be 13 next year, and my Mom was talking about how this might be the last year he would be able to go,and I thought, why? and how do you explain that to him? neutral

omfg Damn, ya'll had some strict parents! disbelief I went trick or treating until I was like 15 or 16 years old. It was hard giving it up, because I loved seeing what candy I was going to get.

Last year, my mom and I noticed that there were a lot of teenagers coming to the house on Halloween. Good sized groups of them, like 6 or 8 at a time. We didn't see too many of the younger ones; they all seemed to be junior high and older.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Okay sweetas mate thanks for that. So basically when children come to ur door and say 'trick or treat' what would happen if U reply 'trick'?

When you choose to "trick" you scare the kids away from your door.... its so fun. A neighbor disguised himself as a scarecrow and sat with other fake scarecrows on his porch, stayed very still, and then would jump out and scare the kids away. A few young ones cried, but all in all it was part of the fun.

Yes there needs to be age limits if they dont outlaw it outright. Im tired of being held hostage by having to get up and give out candy if I should remain at home the night it falls on. I dont want to dismiss some people (older yahoos/teenagers) because I dont want them returning later and doing something to my property. All I can do is shake my head at these...people.

Held hostage? confuse

Just do like everyone else who doesn't do Halloween and make like you're not home. Or hell, just go out to a movie or something.

Teens are running for candy while they can still get away with it. Lots of younger kids these days aren't allowed to go trick or treating. Their parents drag them to lame ass "harvest festivals" and "autumn parties" instead. hrmph

You made a very good point there. The schools around this area often have their own Halloween parties. I think that contributes greatly to there being less little kids going Trick or Treating.

Nope never have tried it and even when I was living in the US I didn't do it. I did experience the haunted hayrides and the haunted eastern state penitentiary tour though which was really cool.
