I love it! Of course, you could just go out trick or drinking and forget the kids. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Like most North American holidays, Hallowe'en began life as a Christian holy day (in spite of what certain Christian fundamentalists will tell you to the contrary about it being a day of devil worship or whatever) that's meaning and celebration has shifted dramatically over time. That said, when you compare to the other two big Christian-based holidays, Christmas and Easter, Hallowe'en actually retains more of its holy symbols and significance than either of those days do, albeit in a strange and silly way. Trick or treating is believed to have begun because the day before All Saint's Day, or All Soul's Day was supposed to be the day when the veils between our world and the demon world dropped. To appease demons, people would leave offerings of food or money (treats) outside their homes in hopes they'd be left alone. Those that didn't would be punished. (tricks) Okay sweetas mate thanks for that. So basically when children come to ur door and say 'trick or treat' what would happen if U reply 'trick'?

I wouldn't mind the teenagers that much if they bothered to make an effort to dress up!
We get these big goofy teens walking around "trick-or-treating" with nothing more than a hooded sweatshirt. I guess the hood up is a costume? I give them like, 1 piece of candy (as opposed to 5 or 6 the little kiddies get). By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

This thread reminds me of something that happened to me when I was 10 years old. I was trick or treating on Halloween, like I usually do. I went to the house of a neighbor's on my rounds. I said my usual, "Trick or treat", when I stepped onto the porch, and the woman who lived there opened the door. She said to me something like, "Well, Nancy, aren't you a little bit old to be trick or treating?" RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My parents discontinued my trick or treating at age 12 Same here. My nephew is going to be 13 next year, and my Mom was talking about how this might be the last year he would be able to go,and I thought, why? and how do you explain that to him? Last year, my mom and I noticed that there were a lot of teenagers coming to the house on Halloween. Good sized groups of them, like 6 or 8 at a time. We didn't see too many of the younger ones; they all seemed to be junior high and older. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

When you choose to "trick" you scare the kids away from your door.... its so fun. A neighbor disguised himself as a scarecrow and sat with other fake scarecrows on his porch, stayed very still, and then would jump out and scare the kids away. A few young ones cried, but all in all it was part of the fun.

I dont want to dismiss some people (older yahoos/teenagers) because I dont want them returning later and doing something to my property. All I can do is shake my head at these...people.
Held hostage? Just do like everyone else who doesn't do Halloween and make like you're not home. Or hell, just go out to a movie or something. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I have gone with my nephews for the past 5-6 years, but I never collect candy,I just stand on the sidewalk at let them collect it all. Then when we get home they willingly share some with me. Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach

The schools around this area often have their own Halloween parties. I think that contributes greatly to there being less little kids going Trick or Treating. RIP, mom.
