hiring people is harder than i thought it would be

i got the green light to hire about 25-30 employees for the holiday season. we put the now hiring sign in the window and a big table full of applications. i made TWO nice signs by the applications fully explaining the scope of the positions (seasonal/temporary, the non-negotiable pay rate, the hours we were looking for etc) a criminal background check is required for all applicants over the age of 18
so what do i get?

applications with missing/incomplete information
sloppy/scratched out info
asking for more money/different hours than being offered
calling all day/all night to see if their application has been reviewed
dressed inappropriately for an interview

i know its tough out here for a lot of people, but for every 1 good application i get, 10 are not. it's like sifting through an american idol cattle call neutral

Use an agency! The cost is worth it for seasonal work as they absorb the wage and pay their staff less. (it's horrible I know but you don't have to go through all the rigmarole)

i would if i could, but i work for a big company and they want each location to do our own hiring. there have been a few nice employee finds so far that i plan to keep after the holidays, so its not all bad.

Are people in the US required to apply for jobs if they're currently unemployed, but receive benefits? (compensation, or whatever it is called over there)

Here you're in many cases required to apply for a certain number of jobs per month (e,g, six). So if I've been looking for something more seriously, I might have been personally just tossing some hastily thrown-together crap at random places to fill out the requirements. You really don't have the time to run at all the interviews, especially when you know already you're not going to get accepted anyway.

i think if you're receiving unemployment benefits, you have to engae in looking for gainful employment. there are a LOT of people who would rather just collect unemployment than work. i have a stack of literally 200 applications from this week alone that i would throw away if i could (legally i can't, so i won't). if you can't fill out 25 questions about yourself correctly (at your own leisure, mind you) then i probably don't need to be heaping some responsibility on you.

In Texas you have to submit at least 7 job applications per WEEK to continue getting unemployment benefits.

nod You can submit to online postings too, but it can still be hard to find that many jobs in your field if you don't want to apply to just any old thing.

i'm probably the most lenient fella when it comes to cuttting people some slack. i actually prefer folksy, every day people over the ones that come all spit shined. that being said, coming to an interview in a wife-beater and timbs just ain't gonna cut it (and asking exactly which felonies will keep you from getting a job doesn't help your cause either) lol

my sister used to tell centrelink she applied to a job each fortnight, they never seemed to check up on her, so she'd write "house of lights" and "stax of slax" and alternate between the 2 businesses.
I drive past them regularly now, since I live quite close, and ALWAYS think of her lol rolleyes nuts

May I ask what the hours and pay rate are like? If they're below a certain level, even if that level is legally acceptable, many people who would be excellent employees plain just will not bother applying.
