Community service for woman in fawn beating death

EUCLID, Ohio An Ohio woman accused of beating a baby deer to death with a shovel after finding it in her flower garden has been sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Seventy-six-year-old Dorothy Richardson of the Cleveland suburb of Euclid pleaded no contest Thursday to one misdemeanor count of animal abuse and was found guilty by a municipal court judge, who also ordered Richardson to pay a $500 fine.

Richardson says she became frightened when she saw the fawn in her garden on June 15 and had meant to shoo it away with the shovel.

Earlier, she pleaded not guilty to two animal abuse counts. One charge was dropped in exchange for her new, no contest plea.

I have been following this story in my local paper since it first occurred. I don't believe this woman's claim that she was frightened when she saw the fawn. rolleyes She lives right by the Cleveland Metroparks, so it should not be a surprise that she might see some deer in her yard. She made two mistakes here: First, for beating a newborn deer to death with a shovel, and secondly, for telling neighbors, "I beat it to death with a shovel. I would do it again". rolleyes One of her neighbors heard her say this, and was wise to report it to the authorities. This has been covered not only here in Ohio, but all over the world, from what I have read. Hopefully, she's learned her lesson from all this, and she won't do such a heartless, cruel thing ever again. disbelief

Hadn't heard of this story, Nancy. But I'm kind of liking the outcome.

Cleveland has had some odd stuff going on lately. I know you've heard about the East Cleveland mayoral race, right? disbelief

Good God! What a nasty old witch.

Seventy-six years-old? I hope her 80 hours of Community Service involves lots of bending and stretching; preferably in cold weather. Scraping gum off the sidewalks; cleaning public restrooms in parks... that sort of thing.

In a nutshell, Nancy, the incumbent East Cleveland mayor Eric Brewer recently lost his primary election bid to opponent Gary Norton after pictures of the mayor in drag turned up and were circulated through the national media. Really unfortunate stuff disbelief...

I know Eric Brewer. He really does care for East Cleveland and he's done decent work, and so it's unfortunate that he lost this way. I also know Gary Norton -- I graduated from high school with him. And while I can't say people working for him would be incapable of circulating the photos, Gary doesn't strike me as the type who'd stoop so low.

It's been a mess of a story.

omg damn, I can see if it was attacking her and she was defending herself, but couldn't she have at least let it alone until it left her garden on its own? I mean the beating wasn't necessary at all the fawn was minding its own business. I hate when people hurt animals for no reason, its so disgusting.

rolleyes She's full of it. She's just crazy and evil with no respect for animals. She saw something in her garden, went on a rampage, and beat it to death. It's not hard to tell that the dear was a baby. All she had to do was startle it and it probably would've just run away. Hell she may have even gotten close enough to help it up, but she's evil as hell so she decided violence was better. Heffa

Agreed, it is pretty pathetic. I read that the deer was making sounds while this woman was hitting it with the shovel! sad disbelief What she did was unthinkable and totally unnecessary!
