Has anybody ever lost weight but just cutting out Pop/Soda/Soft drinks out of your diet( update) I was wondering if anybody has lost weight but cutting out the Soft Drinks from your diet? I'm thinking about quitting. I'm trying to get back my six pack abs. I work out all the time but I just can't get my six pack back [Edited 10/12/09 9:32am]

I'm sure it's contributing to my weight loss. I'm told you'll drop 7 pounds in a year cutting out sodas.
But you have to factor exercise, diet and a whole mess of other things with me, so I can't really blame pop.

I read somewhere that the Carbonation was more of a problem than the sugar. The article said that the carbonation affected the metabolism of Fat. I haven't been able to find that original article or any addition articals on Carbonation and fat metabolism.

Try to drink more water and milk.

It'll have an effect. Regular soda is about 110 calories per can, so cutting it out (especially if you drink lots) means less calories consumed & a bigger payoff from the exercise...

Ex-Moderator | If you want to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume, easy as that. So you need to figure out how many calories you burn in a day and how many you eat.
If you JUST want to look at soda - a 16 ounce bottle of caffeinated soda is roughly 180 calories. If you drink 1 a day that’s 1260 calories a week. You need to burn an extra 3500 calories to lose a pound so if you are drinking a bottle a day and stop and do nothing else differently (assuming you’re maintaining your current weight now) you’d lose 1 pound in just under 3 weeks. If you are currently drinking more than that and stop altogether you’d be changing your calorie intake more dramatically and would be losing faster. |

Assuming that you're exercising as well as watching other foods you eat and not substituting sugary soda with fruit juice, wine, or beer, that will cause you to lose weight in the beginning, because you won't be putting so much high fructose corn syrup into your body. But that will only last for a short time until your body adjusts to the absence of the sugar/high fructose corn syrup.

Back in the day, I used to stock my fridge with Pepsi and it showed. Now I drink more water/juice. I limit my soda intake to once a week(Fresca).

I quit soda because it was making my ankles swell. I haven't had any in about six months and I don't miss it. I feel better not drinking it anymore. I don't know if it helped me to lose weight because I was losing weight because I was sick, but cutting that sugar out had to help.

I haven't been able to find that original article or any addition articals on Carbonation and fat metabolism. That's interesting. I've not heard that carbonation has any effect on metabolism, but I have heard claims it can block the absorption of calcium by blood and bones. If I'm not mistaken, these claims have been debunked. I've cut down significantly on my intake of pop. I was thin to begin with, though, so I haven't noticed any weight loss. In the place of pop, I drink GALLONS of sparking waters. If you also end up doing this, just be sure to watch the amount of sodium in those drinks. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Caffeine competes with calcium at binding area on receptor sites in bones. I've learned that in nutrition class.

I stopped drinking on Oct 1st and so far I've lost 5 pounds. But I do exercise too. I've always exercised so I really think quitting soda has made the difference. For those of you who want to quit, I would quit a little bit at a time. I used to drink 2 sodas a day. Once I quit cold turkey, I did have some headaches from caffeine withdraw for a couple of days.
So has anybody else quit and lost any weight?

But you have to factor exercise, diet and a whole mess of other things with me, so I can't really blame pop. That totally depends on how much soda you were drinking in the first place, though. Someone who only drinks one a day is cutting out only one a day, which probably wouldn't result in significant weight loss. Someone who is used to drinking five or six sugared sodas per day, on the other hand, will probably drop some weight by dropping that from their diet.

That's easy in theory but not always the best way to approach weight loss. If you consume 2000 calories a day, it takes a LOT of working out and activity to burn 2100 calories.
