HELP! New external Hard Drive wont read on Xp Desktop

I bought a

Nexstar 3
External 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure
USB 2.0 Interface

I bought this Hrd Drive but now It say that I may need to mark a partition as active.

I go into the Disk Management and I don't see any new disk configuration.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Are my USB ports messed up? It doesnt say they are...HELP!

Does your disk management see the partition but not know what to do with it?

In other words, does it at least show that something is there?

Yeah nothing is showing at all and I have 2 usb slots occupied with it so SOMETHING should have shown up by now but nothing. I put the disc in to install it but it says it needs a second disc and I'm like confuse
Maybe I have to install it off the website or something sad

What is the manufacturer. This makes no sense.

USB external hard drives are all normally already formated in fat32, which sucks as a file system, but everything and it's mother can read them. You just need to reformatted it in HFS (for mac) or NTFS for NT.

Have you tried right clicking the partition and reformatting it in NTFS?

OK. I have questions,

Did your purchase your external HD with a Hard Drive already plugged in? Or did you purchase an exteranl Hard Drive case and then connect a hard Drive?

I'm sorry, I lil person is playing with my computer, they think they can type. smile

When you plug your hard drive via the USB port, does it showup in Device Manager ... do you see another hard drive icon? It make have a generic name like USB mass storage device. When you plug in your external HD via the USB do you see it intializing down at the toolbar?

Is there an actual hard disk IN the enclosure?

Some 2.5" IDE HD enclosures don't have a power supply and use the USB as the power source, is that the case with this enclosure? If so, you'll need a "Y" USB cable connected to two ports to draw enough power. Also, you won't be able to use a HD larger than 160GB in the unit.

Sorry.... allow me to try this again.

1. Did your purchase your external HD with the hard drive already inclosed? 2. Or did you purchase an external HD case and put your own hard drive in?

If you did number 2 (and number 2 only) I want you to take the hard drive out of the case the disconnect the wires from the ports reconnect them again. Make sure they are on firmly. Then plug your external hard drive back and tell use what happened.

Like what I described below

Second Part;

When you plug your hard drive via the USB port, does it showup in Device Manager ... do you see another hard drive icon? It may have a generic name like USB mass storage device. When you plug in your external HD via the USB do you see it intializing down at the toolbar?

Assuming the enclosure lights up (you may have to unplug and plug in the USB cables a couple of times for this to happen), then:

Right click on "My Computer" and choose Manage.

Under "Storage" on the LEFT pane, select Disk Management

Windows should now give you the option to initialize the disk. If not, locate the
new drive, right click on the new disk (where it reads "Disk #") and choose
Initialize.

Go through the wizard.

Once complete, locate your hard drive in the bottom right pane. Right click on
the area with a status bar (to the right of the “Disk #” area) and choose New
Partition.

Follow the directions of the wizard. Partition type is primary and the recommended file system for PC read only is NTFS. You can reformat to FAT32 (you'll need software for this) afterwards if you intend to share between a Mac and a PC.

Once complete, you should now be able to see the drive in Windows Explorer.

1. Did your purchase your external HD with the hard drive already inclosed?

Yeah...it told me to open it up and "connect it" and screw it in. I think I did it right but I don't know what was supposed to happen because I didnt really connect anything.

2. Or did you purchase an external HD case and put your own hard drive in?

No it has some part inside of it I had to slide in.

If you did number 2 (and number 2 only) I want you to take the hard drive out of the case the disconnect the wires from the ports reconnect them again. Make sure they are on firmly. Then plug your external hard drive back and tell use what happened.

There were no wires to be connected.

Like what I described below

No nothing shows up as if nothing is there...I think I may need some assistance or I should call them
Gosh I hope you can help me get this right pray

Hm. Before you call them I want you to do the last 3 things. Disconnect the external hard drive from the USB port.

Before you do anything check all devices in Device Manager and make sure you don't have any exclaim makers on them in Device Manager. If you have no issues, do the other 2 steps. Please. smile

Number ONE: Take your time and look carefully.

Logical Disk Manager Administrative service and possibly the logical Disk Manager service not being started or the services might be disabled. to solve the problem, click on the "Start" menu, click the "Run" command, and type in: services.msc , scroll down until you see both these services. right click on each of the services about and select properties, on the general tab, change the startup type to "automatic" and click the start button under the service status. After you've done that close out that.

Number Two:

Go to Control panel -> Performance and Maintenance (cannot be in classic view switch over to Category View over to the left under Control Panel) -> Administrator Tools -> Services -> Universal Plug and Play. If Universal Plug and Play is set to manual switch to automatic.

Make sure all things I told to switch to or on automatic. Restart your computer, then plug in your external hard drive and tell us what you see. And then check the Device Manager (Disk Drive), the Toolbar, and over in Disk Managment. Tell use everything.

Another thing. Can you hear the hard drive spinning around in the case? I'm going to assume your HD case has a light of some type where as when press the on button the light comes on. Wanna cover all our bases. smile

I was tired last night and when I get the way I get loopy. That's my excuse, though I've been told I'm always loopy.

Could you post us a link of Nexstar 3 External 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure USB 2.0 Interface are your USB ports 1.1 or 2.0. And, if you know what type of hard drive you have?

I checked around and I saw this but I'm not for sure this the the Nexstar case you have. http://www.tigerdirect.co...CatId=2783

TD3, I believe this is the manual for the HD case in question: http://www.vantecusa.com/...anual1.pdf

These Nexstar cases are notoriously buggy, meaning they are prone to not be immediately readable by the PC, even when plug and play is enabled. They also have DC power supply failures right out of the box (if so equipped).

It might be a good suggestion to try the HD on another machine, be it Mac or PC.

Hope this helps.

My daughter bought an external HDD, MASSCOOL I thinks it's called. She told me she had return the first for that very same reason, the second one worked just fine.

I had a similar problem with my first external hard drive. I plugged the USB in before powering-up the PC and XP at the time (don't know which Service Pack) didn't recognise that anything new was plugged in.

It didn't register until I unplugged the USB and plugged it back in whilst XP was up and running already. I felt so dumb. I just kept rebooting for ages. sad

Paisleypark, check it on another computer at a friend's or a library. If there is still no response, I would just return the case and go out to MicroCenter on Hwy. 100 in St. Louis Park. They have tons of cases for under $20. IDE or SATA, 2.5" or 3.5". They have everything.

http://www.microcenter.co..._park.html

I recently picked up a 2.5" IDE non-powered case for $6 from there for an old laptop drive. Completely plug and play. Could be that you just got a dud. Seems QC is iffy on a lot of peripheral computer hardware these days.
