I don't want to say much for those who may still want to see it, but I just felt like it introduced us to a beautiful story with beautiful character development and then turned the switch off before giving anyone a real chance to flesh out. Great movie, great characters, just not enough resolution for me.
I loved The Visitor. And despite the ending it left me feeling really good about people in general and how they can come together regardless of their different backgrounds. SPOLIER: In my mind if the movie continued, The teacher stays in touch with Mouna and eventually makes a trip to Syria with Tarek's gf to visit the two of them. Spoiler edit [Edited 10/25/09 10:06am] Yes! Totally agree. I'm not sure why this would have been so hard to explore. I don't need the story of the rest of their lives. I know they were all touched by each other and grew from their experiences. But to leave it where it was just felt lacking. All the same, very glad to have seen it.

Imitation of Life. 1959. Lana Turner, Juanita Moore and Sandra Dee in a very lush and beautiful Douglas Sirk version... And the original from 1934 with Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers, which is even better (and in black and white, though this image suggests it's in color)... great movie...sad unlucky7 reincarnated

I think the movie ended the way it did to emphasize how different the environment is for immigrants in NYC since the terrorist attacks and wanted the viewer to know that good, innocent people are getting thrown out along with the bad. A more upbeat conclusion would have downplayed that message.

I found it a bit unbelievable how the guy neglected his job so much. I was like 'Dude, go to your job!' There's Joy In Expatriation.
