Another great film with Paxton and Thornton is One False Move. It may have already been mentioned. Don't think it played in Cinemas but it's a good one. Don't take life too seriously, noone gets out alive.

Use the men!" Just added this to my Netflix. You'll love it. Madonna could remake it today and basically play herself. There's another Stanwyck pre-code film which is interesting, called The Miracle Woman. It's basically a rant against organised religion (specifically broadcasted evaqngelism) versus the power of faith. I think it was banned in loads of places at the time of its release. It co-stars the very handsome (and gay) David Manners. It's only available as part of a UK box-set, but I'm sure that if you Google, you'll find a way to watch it. Some clips, here: "This isn't a 'House of God'! This is a meeting-place for hypocrites!"

Yes, the whole reason the Tony Leung's character is in a funk is because of what happened in the first film. Maggie Cheung from the first movie even makes a cameo in a flashback scene in 2046.

There are so many I could recommend because I'm a bit of a movie snob, but for now I'll just post this one, one of my favorites of all time:
Brotherhood Of The Wolf Imagine Queen Margot, Sleepy Hollow and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon all rolled up into one film.

Just make sure that if you don't understand Swedish to watch the version with the theatrical English subtitles. The initial North American DVD release crapped all over the English translations. I was gonna rent this flick a few weeks ago. This settles it -- I'm seeing it tomorrow night. Note what I said about the subtitles. That makes a big difference to some people. One of my favorites. A Canadian film that's easily mistaken for American.

'Chopper' is unintentionally hilarious. The scenes at home . . . I own it too . . . Yah it's a priceless film I see Mark Read (Chopper) often through work. A few scenes from Chopper were filmed next door to my home it was an awesome time having the crew around.

I viewed the movie tonight before I saw this last post of yours, and I say THANK GOODNESS I just happened to view the theatrical English subtitled version!!! The American DVD translations are just criminal!! It's definitely a cool little film. And it really does bring light to certain excesses of the genre these days. All things being equal, the violent scenes were quite tame as compared to other current vamp projects... but because the film overall was so masterfully subtle, those moments of violence were all the more powerful, I thought. The final payoff scene was just perfect. ...And I think I'm in love with the girl who played Eli. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Genesia said: Harlepolis said: Thats one of momma's fave movies. I cringe whenever I watch it though I can at least tolerate the 1st version because of Claudette Colbert and the lovely Ms.Fredi Washington who played the bi-racial daughter. Even though that role gave her alot of hype, it was a curse more than a blissing. They wanted to typecast her or make her play the 2 roles black actresses were supposed to play at the time; maid or whore. She refused all of the above and in result she fell into obscurity. It didn't help that people convincingly thought that she was like just the ROLE she played in IOL, which made them to have a love/hate relationship with her,,,,even though she was different by FAAAAAR from that girl in the movie. And the whole "passing" storyline makes a lot more sense in 1934 than it does in 1959, IMO. Genesia and I have talked about this movie countless times but I might not ever have posted here about it that I find the 1934 film much more progressive (for the times) than the remake in the 50's. O.K. So it's been a few weeks and I've had a chance to see some of the movies directly on this list, or in relation to this list, (same director/genre etc)...
For the record, my queue has about 100 or so movies in it right now, and most are still coming from this list, so this is still most definitely a work in progress. (The next two coming are "Nothing But A Man" and "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof). Any way for brevity's sake, here are the one's I've seen thus far bucketed by my thoughts on them.... Liked but didn't love - Simple Plan, Harold and Maude, Killer of Sheep, Blood Simple, A Brief Encounter Not my flavor - Martin, To Catch A Thief, Do The Right Thing Very good - Let The Right One In, I've Loved You So Long, The Hustler Absolutely Spectacular - Lars and the Real Girl, Network I've got a few more thoughts on some of these I'd like to share. On "A Brief Encounter", I thought the story in general was very well done, I just felt the voice overs were abit too soap opera-esque for my taste. Nevertheless, I am very glad I watched this movie. I always thought Bridges of Madison County was one of Clint Eastwoods few very well done movies, (and still do). But I can now see where the writer farmed a lot of the material from this one. On "Lars and The Real Girl" I get how some of the criticism of this movie could be rooted in the unlikely nature of the townspeople really banding together the way in which they do. But I most definitely think that is part of the movie's charm. GREAT movie - Very well done. I simply can not believe I had never heard of "Network" before. I believe someone in this thread already referred to it as prophetic. The way that movie ends is sadly what's next in line for reality TV today. Brillant movie. Two more: I had not watched "Do The Right Thing" in 20 years because I was so put off by it the first time. I tried it again thinking I must have missed the beauty in the ambiguity of the message. But it still just doesn't work for me at all. I would REALLY welcome some commentary on what I am missing, because most people who watch this movie think it is one of the best of its' genre. To me it is divisive and fails to make a point. (And I'm not squeamish about this subject. I love American History X). I LOVED the characters in "The Visitor" but HATED the ending. I don't want to say much for those who may still want to see it, but I just felt like it introduced us to a beautiful story with beautiful character development and then turned the switch off before giving anyone a real chance to flesh out. Great movie, great characters, just not enough resolution for me. If you're new to this thread, please feel free to add more movie suggestions. I'm trying to get to them all. If you've read my War and Peace post here and have some thoughts, please feel free to share. Thanks

I loved The Visitor. And despite the ending it left me feeling really good about people in general and how they can come together regardless of their different backgrounds. SPOLIER: In my mind if the movie continued, The teacher stays in touch with Mouna and eventually makes a trip to Syria with Tarek's gf to visit the two of them.
