Folded arms is defensive,

http://changingminds.org/...nguage.htm
Hiding
Hands are often used in communication and hiding the hands may indicate a desire not to communicate or not to collaborate, saying 'I don't want to talk with you' or 'I do not agree with you'.
This may be done in a deliberate gesture of defiance, such as stuffing hands in pockets. Liars may hide their hands in fear that they will give themselves away.
Hiding hands may also be a position of listening, sending the message 'I do not want to talk because I want to listen to you.'
Putting hands in pockets or behind the back can also be due to just feeling relaxed and not needing to talk.

I was serious. it's not always what it looks like according the books.
Some non verbal communication can have a total different meaning in other countries. I experienced at my former work at a refugee center.

I tend to fold my arms. Sometimes it's nothing more than not having them hang by my sides. My friend is always giving me a hard time- that I look "upset" or "defensive". rolleyes

Because women dont usually HAVE pockets to put hands in lol

I put my arms up when I'm tired of the conversation or things going on.

I put my hands in my pocket sometimes to stop making my ba--- stick to my leg when its hot outside or my boxers are too tight. Either that or if I am broke without a dime to my name I do it unconciously.

I put my hands in my pockets all the time, in fact I love dresses and skirts with pockets so I can put my hands in them.

I think folded arms are protection, they either keep people away, or they show that a person is just plain uncomfortable. ON the flip side they may be a display of being powerful, though I think most displays are rooted in insecurity. Basically you're hugging youself.

I have my hands in my pockets all the time. I don't like them just hanging down. I assume it's insecurity. It's the same issue as smoking--gives your hands some purpose.

Folded arms usually mean that a person wants to defend oneself, because this posture usually brings some distance inbetween the two people. Furthermore you usually stand uprightly with folded arms, which makes you look even more confident.

Putting hands in ones pockets is not a natural posture, so the meaning can differ from person to person.

Some do it out of insecurity.

Some do it to look relaxed.

I prefer walking with one hand in my pocket as I feel more comfortable like that, because I look stupid when both my arms swing around my body when I walk. lol
