I don't think it's time yet to discard cursive, but I can indeed envision a day that it becomes superfluous no matter how admirable an artform. emoticon edit [Edited 9/20/09 19:07pm] Because when zombies take over we're not going to have electricity and someone should be able to write down (legibly and beautifully) what's happening. aaawww I'll still let you all have electricity!

I find it funny they're worried about writing looking all pretty when 99% of kids, teens and adults cannot spell or use proper grammar to save themselves.
Teach basic English skills and spelling THOROUGHLY then worry about presentation.

We're not talking calligraphy here are we. Bitch, it's called CURSIVE! And additionally, it's "FRENCH FRIES"--not chips, fool! I never really write anything at length anymore, but I guess if I did I'd use my own neat style of cursive then (very similar to my mum's handwriting). Normally I'm just jotting down a note here or there, writing a few words in a card or writing an address on an envelope. In those cases I always change my handwriting, sometimes italicized, sometimes oversized and rounded, or maybe more angular. I used to do calligraphy so I throw in some flourishes on occasion too. Most of the time I just scribble though. Then go and have some chips.

*mourns for cursive*
This pisses me off. I always write in cursive and the two examples given above are slightly different to the way I was taught. Kids getting all up themselves about having to learn to write should have their laptops taken away from them Li'l fuckers should do without mobile phones and credit cards too. GET OFF MY VERANDAH! Granny's gonna send you a little EMP so you have to write "...and If all of this Love Talk ends with Prince getting married to someone other than me, all I would like to do is give Prince a life size Purple Fabric Cloud Guitar that I made from a vintage bedspread that I used as a Christmas Tree Skirt." I feel like such an old man for saying this, but one more reason the little shits, I mean the kids, should learn cursive is to save yet another dying breed: the handwritten thank-you note. I hate that parents don't teach their kids the polite way of saying thanks anymore.

Ahhh cursive. I too learned it in 3rd grade. It was a requirement to use from then on in the school I went to. It wasn't until junior high that we were allowed to actually decide what we wanted to use. In high school, the teachers didn't care. Same with college. Basically I've been writing in fusion style since high school. A mix of cursive and print. The only complaint I've gotten is that I write toooo small. Why count it out, though? It's very important to learn for formal letters. It also comes in handy when you're short a few spaces in notes. Kids these days have so much technology around them that they're starting to rely more on the computer than their own hands.
Back in my day (the 90s!) we had to do everything the hard way! By hand, and with the help of the librarian with the copying machine, dadgum it! And we were happy to get it! And blue raspberry suckers were still 79 cents....mmmmmhmm!

I learned it starting in the 1st or 2nd grade. Used all the way until the 3rd year of HS
I usually write in cursive for my signature but other than that, rarely "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
