Zombieland - 7.5 out of 10. really enjoyed it, but Bill Murray made it for me. without him it probably would have been a 5 or 6.

really liked it. Could not predict it, and it had a unique way of ending the story...

but you do get frustrated at the character for letting everyone shit on him (not literally)

I totally understand what you are saying, but that is specifically why I was disappointed. Very rarely is something so favorably reviewed by both the critics and the general public.

Is it fair that my expectations were high because of this? Probably not. But I didn't expect something so incredibly shallow and soulless. I thought I was in for something new, different, complex & engaging. I got Hollywood.

To your point, my take on the immense popularity might be due to the vast majority of movie viewers today having less demands on what they can derive enterainment from than I do. That doesn't make me right and "them" wrong. Just as you say. It's just different strokes.....

Who knows? Maybe the solution is I need just need to loosen up a little. smile

I absolutely loved the movie, the documentary style in which it was filmed, the humor, which in my opinion is typically South African.
And I surely would not classify this as a shallow or soulless movie. If you are familiar with the apartheid system and the current political situation in South Africa it is very clear this movie can be seen as a metaphor for what happened during and after apartheid.

But hey, that’s just my opinion.

District 9

My rating is:

I tried to leave the cinema before it was over but my friend wouldn't let me - bad.

And I paid for the tickets.

From the trailers and hype, I thought this might finally be a modern movie that explored our relationships with other forms of life. A movie that would make us think about our place here and the potential for much more.

It was horrendous. Why does every f***ing Hollywood movie have to try to inject romance? Would any normal human being go into this and expect that type of dynamic? I don't want to give anything away for those who may want to see this, so I'll just say this.

The characters were, um, not there.

You simply can not create tension if you don't care about anyone. Why don't movie makers understand this?

Literally the end of this movie could have been the space ship blows up and everyone dies or 180 degrees the opposite. It was totally irrelevant to me.

No offense to those that found this movie enjoyable. I see some of you do/did. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but it was probably in the top 20 when set against expectations.
[Edited 9/25/09 11:04am]

This movie was supposed to be a popcorn movie (like Robocop) that is the a cinematic translation of the appeal of video games. In fancy video games these days (complete with voices of Hollywood actors) they have intros, backgrounds, narrative structure, set design, gadgets, etc.

Hi MacDaddy.

I hear you about the Apartheid metaphor. That's actually one of the things that most excited me about this movie. The exploration of our relations with life forms from another planet, (the metaphor w/race in S Africa - or anywhere really), and the basic human negative instinct associated with the treatment of something foreign to us.

I think this movie failed for me primairly because it leaned on the action behind the chase to provide the drama, not the characters and their interaction with each other. I'm going off memory here, but how many actual minutes of the movie were the main character's family involved? Two? Three? Five?

This movie was over two hours long right? Being cryptic for those who have not seen this yet, the movie ends with the "flower" scene. I don't know this guy's wife. The movie has not told me anything about her. I don't know their relationship because I don't really know him either. All I know is that he can run REALLY fast when he has to. Why do I specifically care that he's trying to get back to her?

I think (hope) you can tell I'm not trying to pick a fight here. It's just a movie. And for every person that loves it someone else will hate it. We're in different camps on this and that's obviously totally fine. Again, I just think this movie was such a missed opportunity. It didn't explore any of the avenues I wanted it to with any degree of conviction.

Again, apologies in advance if my tone seems harsh, I'm not trying to be at all. If you can't tell, I was really let down by this one.

Cheers

Hey Fenwick, I know you weren't attacking and I absolutely did not take it that way. In the end it was of course an action movie and I can understand why some people don't like it. My judgement might be clouded because I'm totally in love with South Africa and I love the approach of the film. That's it.

Couples Retreat 3/10

Full of stereotypes and the previews were way funnier than the movie. I like Vince Vaughn less and less with each movie he's in or produces.

Law Abiding Citizen 7/10

I didn't like the ending.

Paranormal Activity 4/10

Growing up terrified of "real" demons lessened the scary aspect, I guess. shrug

I've been putting my Netflix to use and streaming a lot of movies lately.

[img]http://twitchfilm.net/news/sleeves_posters/DeadGirl.jpg[/img
DeadGirl- 6 out of 10. The only thing I found odd was.....in real life I highly doubt two teen boys would be so open to others about having sex with a zombie woman.

Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy. 1 out of 10. 2nd worst movie of my life. I read where this was originally supposed to be a Hungarian soft core porn.....but they edited it into a horror/troma movie. Troma is low budget, but this is one movie that they shouldn't have claimed.

P2-7 out of 10. Ok.....this was actually pretty decent. Not too many actors involved, but simplicity worked well for this movie.
It mainly focused on a security guard of a parking garage, and the woman he intentionally trapped in there. He was pretty much an obsessed psycho who eventually tried to kill her after he got the message that she wanted nothing to do with him. Considering it was more of a thriller, it had one pretty gruesome kill that I wasn't expecting. The lead actor killed anyone that tried to get in his way. It takes place during Christmas. I might have to suggest this for our Christmas movie at dinner. lol

Pervert!- 7 out of 10. One of the most random movies ever. This was clearly a tribute to Russ Meyer. The director even gave a shout out to Russ at the end credits. Russ died a year before this movie came out. He had everything down pact.....right down to Mary Carey's big titties bouncing around everywhere. This was supposed to be a horror/comedy.....but it was pure comedy to me. I died laughing when I saw what the killer was.
