District 9
My rating is: I tried to leave the cinema before it was over but my friend wouldn't let me - bad. And I paid for the tickets. From the trailers and hype, I thought this might finally be a modern movie that explored our relationships with other forms of life. A movie that would make us think about our place here and the potential for much more. It was horrendous. Why does every f***ing Hollywood movie have to try to inject romance? Would any normal human being go into this and expect that type of dynamic? I don't want to give anything away for those who may want to see this, so I'll just say this. The characters were, um, not there. You simply can not create tension if you don't care about anyone. Why don't movie makers understand this? Literally the end of this movie could have been the space ship blows up and everyone dies or 180 degrees the opposite. It was totally irrelevant to me. No offense to those that found this movie enjoyable. I see some of you do/did. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but it was probably in the top 20 when set against expectations. [Edited 9/25/09 11:04am] There's nothing wrong with hating this movie of course. But I find your rant funny because the film was a big hit with both critics and the general public (according to metacritic.com anyway) so when you ask why don't movie makers get it and why would people care about anyone in the film, it comes across a little like someone complaining how Hollywood is crazy for releasing a terrible film like Star Wars. And again, there's nothing wrong with hating District 9. Or Star Wars for that matter.

Very rarely is something so favorably reviewed by both the critics and the general public. Is it fair that my expectations were high because of this? Probably not. But I didn't expect something so incredibly shallow and soulless. I thought I was in for something new, different, complex & engaging. I got Hollywood. To your point, my take on the immense popularity might be due to the vast majority of movie viewers today having less demands on what they can derive enterainment from than I do. That doesn't make me right and "them" wrong. Just as you say. It's just different strokes..... Who knows? Maybe the solution is I need just need to loosen up a little.

I bought the DVD "Halloween" (the 2007 version) last week. The storyline of the first half of the movie was about Michael Myer's childhood, his first murders, and his mental institution years. It was a very interesting and entertaining storyline....if it were about someone else other than Michael Myers. This movie had Michael Myers coming from a white trash family with a mother who was a stripper and a stepfather who was an unemployed, drunk, homophobic redneck. Great storyline for someone else but it wasn't realistic for Michael Myers. With a family like that, they could never have afforded to live in that middle class neighborhood and would be living in a trailer park. Michael Myers' family in the original was a normal middle class family. In the remake, young Michael Myers himself was the young metalhead type child with the long hair and the KISS T Shirt. Hell, he looked just like Jody Foster when she was in the movie "Freaky Friday" back in the 1970s.
And the second part of the movie, they tried to recreate the original but they changed the storyline. In the new version, Michael Myers kills Laurie's parents and Annie gets stabbed but still lives. It's just too far away from the original because those changes totally clash with all the content of the sequels of the original. Andy is a four letter word.

Interesting to see Jason with what seemed to be somewhat longer-term motive, as opposed to a mere killer reflex. But this redux adds zero to the mythology or aesthetic of the franchise otherwise. The backstory hasn't changed a lick, the characters still don't elicit an ounce of concern, the cliches are still there without any self-awareness that might make them fun, and while the kills are slightly -- just slightly -- more complex, the Saw or Hostel films bleed circles around this flick where inspired sadism is concerned. Big waste of time. 2 of 5 stars. ugh... watched it recently and was so annoyed with it. what was that horseshit about the tunels below crystal lake? craptacular Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton
