Dictionary of Australian Slang
Wally - someone who keeps making mistakes, not a very clever person "wally is common slang here for someone who is a bit of an idiot. It isn't a nasty word - you would commonly use it of someone you like or love." in the UK: "Walk into any fish'n'chip shop and ask for a wally and you will be provided with a pickled gherkin. Walk in to any other shop and ask for a wally and you are likely to be introduced to the most dim-witted assistant on the premises."

That's great
Well done Wally So this is an Australian thing, huh? Funny how Americans jumped quickly to say it was all nonsense and stupid ( IT IS ) yet find it hard to believe we (non Americans) see nothing wrong in a drawing of a black girl eating watermelon in a soda can Anyway

I think it should be Wally's decision to be called something else if it really bothers him. Like you said, kids will bully and tease one another for many reasons. My maiden name used to cause me to get teased, I still hate to say it.

But it seems to have stuck in this culture (if you could even call it that) Wally is a champion

It's a British thing too. A "wally" is a silly person. I guess that Australians are basically just Brits anyway; albeit with tans and better teeth.

How rude of that teacher! if he wasnt so hot id report him
Kids are more likely to associate Wally with "wheres wally" -which is cool(the book nerd in me...sorry) or as u say, wall-e. My 10 yo son Ben is getting BEN10 but most kids got bored with that, and he is back to watching the dvds he has. seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

I was always associated with Charlotte's Web, as you know

from Wally to Walt is such a slight change, what's the big deal? I say do it if it's what the kid wants, if it makes him more comfortable in school then why not?

see I also agree with that, and if he can be Walt at school and Wally at home, I also think so, no big deal. I don't want to stick to my principles if it will be detrimental to my kid! I also think Walt might be the more grown up sounding name, and it might be the kick in the pants he needs to act a little more mature!
