big fucking deal, tyra wait til you're damn near 40 to make a stand on beauty standards
Tyra lets her 'real' hair down Tyra Banks revealed her "real hair" today on the season premiere of The Tyra Show, which now airs on The CW Network at 4:00 p.m. Tyras Banks: "I feel like it's my responsibility to redefine true beauty, so I've shown myself with no makeup and now I'm showing my real hair - and it's all because I want more women to be proud of who they are...inside and out." Tyra, who entered the studio with dripping wet hair, also invited studio audience members on stage to touch and feel her "real hair" during the taping to ensure it was in fact real. By the end of the show, her hair stylist Oscar james had given her a cute curly 'do minus about three inches and she looked just fine. [Edited 9/8/09 18:16pm] [Edited 9/8/09 18:16pm]

When I wash my "real hair" it does not look like that, it's curly. Plus her hair is relaxed and not "natural" and many of us "Black women" can grow our hair especially with all the better products out there. No big deal! She needs to cover up that big ole fo'head! yeah I said it, what? Plus her hair looks like she could have been had it styled and walked around town with it so why was she wearing that cheap hair anyway? And please someone call Beyonce so she can start rocking her "real hair" and get off the cheap lacefront shit. Tired of rich Black women with cheap fake hair.

It's like walking around in a fat suit for a day. Oh well, you still get to go home and be Tyra Banks. |

Considering that it's a modeling show, she's fairly inclusive of different types. I mean that show is not contributing anything of substance to this world but it doesn't promote unhealthy standards or practices either.

I think when it comes to topics like this, Tyra means well but she doesn't know how to go about it.
You've heard of white privilege? Well, there's also such a thing as rich (ex)supermodel privilege. The woman is clueless. [Edited 9/8/09 19:26pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

It's a modeling competition for a specific industry. She's not auditioning models for Woman's Day or Family Circle. Because the women on that particular show are not a size 18 or 50 years old, doesn't mean they aren't "true" beauties. You should pitch a show for Plus Size models. I'd watch in a heartbeat!

She's clueless all the way to the Bank (pun intended).
I wish I was that clueless.

It's just a bit hypocritical to me, is all. Is she so afraid to be seen as an average looking woman?

She's totally upfront in that clip, where she says she just came from the shower..."But you know I had to beat my face first". Some women are like that. My mother would not be seen without her face on till much later in life. It is what it is. She likes her hair and makeup. That's average to her. Why is that wrong? Have you seen some of her hairstyles? She's RuPaul with a vagina. Tyra might not be Maya Angelou, but she aint the devil in a weave draggin girls down either. [Edited 9/8/09 19:42pm]

her hairline is not depleted. she got a fivehead. and her face is not aging well...less makeup would be better. then she could pass for 10-15 years younger like I do.

Not speaking for Tyra of course, but some people just love makeup, the way others love clothes or bags or shoes and rather look their age with a fierce face on than younger and natural-looking. It's just preferences.
