I've never understood why so many ppl talk him down. There are positive messages in most of his movies. I rather the stage plays though. b/c positive & good are 2 different things, it'd be nice to have both

Tyler Perry Announces Dream Cast for 'Colored Girls'
When it was announced last week that Tyler Perry will be writing, directing and producing a film version of Ntozake Shange's award-winning 1975 play 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,' there was plenty of talk as to who would be cast. Well, while promoting his latest film, 'I Can Do Bad All By Myself,' which opens Sept. 11, Perry talked about who he wanted to appear in the movie. Among the chosen few are Oscar winner Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Ruby Dee, Cicely Tyson, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Beyonce Knowles, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys. Of the 11 actresses mentioned, six have already committed to be in the film, but Perry wouldn't say who exactly. Oprah loves to act, so will you ever do a film for her? Tyler Perry: Yes, she's in my next movie, 'For Colored Girls.' Here's what I will tell you. Here's my dream cast, and it hasn't been officially announced yet. There are 15 characters in the film and my dream cast is Kimberly Elise, Cicely Tyson, Ruby Dee, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Thandie Newton, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Beyonce. I've talked to 6 of the women and they have said yes. You have to figured out that part. No Mary J. Blige? TP: She just told me that she wants to be in it, so we'll see. Will 'Colored' be different from the play and will you be throwing your name in front of the title? TP: My name will not be in front of the title because it's not an original work for me. There will be no Madea, so all of you can relax. It's going to be true to what it is. If you know anything about the play, you know that it's a bunch of poems. There's no real story, and that's probably why it's never been made into a movie. The way the movie opens is that all of these different women are leading their own lives, and they pass each other and you follow their stories. No one knows each other and halfway in the movie, they end up in this center that this woman started called 'The Colored Girl center,' where women go through like a 12-step program for healing. That's what the script is about. I want to make sure that I respect and honor the play because it was written before I was born. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Atlanta in November and continue through December, with a release planned for next year. http://www.bvonmovies.com...r-colored/ [Edited 9/11/09 19:11pm]

Harlepolis said: DesireeNevermind said: Ahhh. Well to each his own but uh...don't most women regardless of ethnicity heal themselves with a good man after being done wrong by a bad one? Either that or go the celibate route? Women are emotional creatures and when one gets done wrong she don't stay quiet about it. I agree some black women are complex and multi-dimensional but many are predictable as well. I think the "go to church" part is specific to his largely black female audience and I do believe the majority of a congregation at any black church is made up of women. I never saw Why Did I Get Married but I did enjoy Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Daddy's Little Girls and The Family That Preys. I mean his films have grossed over 400 million worldwide. Black people have come out in large support of his plays and films. The brotha must be doing something right (and positive). Nope! Not necessarily Yes I AGREE, there're predictable ones,,,,but how many times should we get hammered on the head with the same "broken down in desparate need of a man" role over & over again? Give a girl some variety here. And Marlboro have grossed OVER some countries budget, so what? It still make their product unhealthy(and I'm a smoker ) the point is, while I marvel at the fact that he's a remarkable businessman esp in this age of recession and also the fact that he's(to my knowledge) the only person who keeps hiring black actors/actresses, but it shouldn't stop us people from examining his work. Being passive for the sake of not getting labeled with the "hater" word will only get us ending up with more & more 1/2 assed bullshit coonfests like this guy's movies. As for some black people seeing something in his movies,,,,,honest to god, I don't know what it is and I've been trying to find out. Kudos to them, that doesn't mean I will jump on that bandwagon anytime soon. [Edited 9/9/09 18:50pm] But but but what about The Family That Preys? That wasnt exactly match made in heaven movie. I just think Tyler shows that he likes how a relationship can work out in the end...as a single person I think it is what HE desires to see. Even Daddy's Little Girls had a STRONG black woman who did not "give in" to a man but fell for him and his daughters. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I've just been reading up till now, but I'm sorry... I love "Harlem Nights"
My favorite line from that movie: "I'm a honest Ho. All my hos is honest." But seriously. I have mixed feelings about Tyler Perry movies. I can't stand Madea... I'm soooo over her. But I did enjoy a couple of the films, even though they do fit the same formula over and over. Someone made the point that there are a lot of other films that are just as- if not much more inane- starring Will Farrell (oh God! ), all those "American Pie" movies, etc. People have different ideas of funny. As for that list- things like that are unfair because who can ultimately decide what is THE WORST? The Black community is so diverse, no film or TV show is going to depict all of us, and someone is going to object. There were those of us who complained that showing "hood life" is not the way we all are. Others complained that the Cosbys weren't "Black life".... But that list includes poor portrayals, bad acting, f'd up filmmaking, and shit that just wasn't funny or dramatic, so what are we calling "worst"? I am personally tired of Tyler Perry. It seems like he cranks out films waaaay too frequently, so when I see a commercial for one I just go "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"
