What sort of things did they say? Were they based on depictions in Perry's work?
They asked me if black people thought the Mr. Brown character was funny. They also thought he was a very negative stereotype.

I hear ya.

I might be offended at Mr Brown's character if he were the only -- or most prominently placed -- black male character in Perry's stuff. He definitely walks the buffoon line because his main function is comic relief, but I don't get the impression Perry wants us to see him as totally dumb, shiftless, a worthless human being, or representative of black males in general. I think Perry's just using him as a vehicle to laugh at some of the silly things in our culture -- the nutty clothes, the dancing, etc. He's always got more straight-laced, smart, handsome black male characters elsewhere.

Ahhh. Well to each his own but uh...don't most women regardless of ethnicity heal themselves with a good man after being done wrong by a bad one? Either that or go the celibate route? Women are emotional creatures and when one gets done wrong she don't stay quiet about it. I agree some black women are complex and multi-dimensional but many are predictable as well.

I think the "go to church" part is specific to his largely black female audience and I do believe the majority of a congregation at any black church is made up of women. I never saw Why Did I Get Married but I did enjoy Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Daddy's Little Girls and The Family That Preys. I mean his films have grossed over 400 million worldwide. Black people have come out in large support of his plays and films. The brotha must be doing something right (and positive). confused

Nope! Not necessarily lol Yes I AGREE, there're predictable ones,,,,but how many times should we get hammered on the head with the same "broken down in desparate need of a man" role over & over again? Give a girl some variety here.

And Marlboro have grossed OVER some countries budget, so what? It still make their product unhealthy(and I'm a smoker lol) the point is, while I marvel at the fact that he's a remarkable businessman esp in this age of recession and also the fact that he's(to my knowledge) the only person who keeps hiring black actors/actresses, but it shouldn't stop us people from examining his work. Being passive for the sake of not getting labeled with the "hater" word will only get us ending up with more & more 1/2 assed bullshit coonfests like this guy's movies.

As for some black people seeing something in his movies,,,,,honest to god, I don't know what it is and I've been trying to find out. Kudos to them, that doesn't mean I will jump on that bandwagon anytime soon.

Smoking is very unhealthy and can cause lung cancer but no matter how many times we get hammered in our heads by the warnings, some people stop cold turkey and other people, including my grandmother, continue to smoke until they get emphysema, lung cancer and die. Tyler Perry's movies and plays are funny. People need to laugh more in life. This could be why people enjoy his movies.

Don't know what it is you're looking for in a movie. Maybe you're the
classical movie type like Raisin in the Sun and Gone with the Wind.
There are some out there like that.
Most modern movies we could spend
all day talking about buffoonery, stereotypes, and the like. You have
movies like 40 year old virgin, Superbad, Dodgeball, and the like to
be picky. At the end of the day they are all movies. Coming from a
black director's perspective i would watch Tyler's movies anyday over
some of the crap like Juice, Menace 2 Society, How High, etc.

No I'm not lol I like classic movies and I also like modern stuff just like the next girl, but I know when I'm getting fed with bullshit. In my case though, I have 0 tolerance for it. Yes I agree "at the end of the day they are all movies" but if you have kids, then I wouldn't underestimate the power of cinema and ALL media outlets if I were you, how they effect the minds of the young ones is pretty well documented.

Speaking of modern movies, go watch Medicine For Melancholy and Good Day To Be Black & Sexy, both movies came out last year,,,,,let me know what you think when you do.

1. I would've rank The Wiz A LOT higher than #100. That film was an over-produced piece of crap! lol

2. How dare they put Shaft OR Higher Learning in the Top 100 at all?!? mad

3. I agree with putting The Toy on that list. But in the Top 10 AND ahead of Girl 6?!? Oh hell no! disbelief At least The Toy was interesting (the obvious slavery overtone aside). Girl 6 was freaking boring and pointless, definitely THE worst Spike Lee joint ever!

So be it, If I or anybody else don't settle for less just because the bad outweighs the good, then so be it.

And no, there're PLENTY of good black films(new or old) it just happens that in our case we have to pull up the effort to look for them. Check any of your local movie screenings(if you're a New Yorker or from LA, you're mostly lucky) you'll be blown away by the wealth of talent, intelligence and wit by black filmmakers, male or female.

Sadly, these movies don't get major distribution because "the power that be" believe that ANY black movie that stems away from "coonary" are too bourgeois,,,,and therefore don't sell shrug

As much as I'd love to disagree with that,,,,its the sad truth. Thats what I meant when I said we don't have much balance in our movies, and that is why there's solace in "independent" black cinema because,,,,,at least, they get it and they have great deal of respect for their audience.

Isn't that why we should support Perry? I mean he's got his own studio now and is working on being his own distributor and creating a forum for up and coming black film makers. As for the coonery, black folk are just as much to blame because they give white producers what they think they want instead of what they know will make money. If black people come out in droves to support a decent film like "Deliver us From Eva" or a not-so-decent but non-coonish film like "Waiting to Exhale" then that proves there is a market beyond **cough** "How to Be a Player." We can tip the scales of balance in our favor and Perry is a good start.

Exactly, which is why I don't spend my money on a TP movie shrug somebody gotta break the cycle, might well be me and a handful of others. I don't have to support him just because he's black, that excuse is so passe.

Like I said, I dmire the fact that he's a savvy businessman who stays giving black actors/actressses steady job,,,,but the quality of his work is subpar at best, WACK at worst IMHO.

Don't Be A Menace wasn't supposed to be a "quality" black film, it's a parody. It's purpose was to take glimpse at the stereotypes presented in Menace To Society, South Central, and Boyz In The Hood and make fun of them

you might as well put I'm Gonna Get You Sucka on the list if that's the case

And what is Harlem Nights doing on that list?! mad
