I used to wear wigs all the time. For exactly the reason you gave, to change my hair without damaging it. I've had black, blond, pink and brown, long and short, curly and straight.
If you get a good wig cap, you shouldn't have a problem hiding your regular hair.
Yes, they can be hot. I liked wearing them in the winter. lol
They were never "itchy".

NDRU - you'd be surprised how good they can look. I mean, I think mine all totally looked like wigs, but some of them people were shocked to find out it wasn't my hair.

Awesome. What do you think of the first two I posted?

I love them and I think they'll look fabulous on you!

Sometimes you have to be careful with seams in the front but they look like they're constructed well enough they'll look "natural". Also for you the more hair the better. If you've got a LOT of hair under a wig cap a really short wig might look a little out of shape so you're better off going for longer looks.

Awesome, thanks!

How do I tuck my hair under the cap? Braid it?

That would probably work best. You can flatten the braid/excess hair at the nape of your neck if it will be hidden by the longer hair or even higher on your head if the wig has a big hair kinda style.
I never had to worry about that, my hair rarely even reaches my shoulders so I can easily just tuck it up in the cap.
