SAN FRANCISCO — The NFL player who Tila Tequila accused of choking her and knocking her down says that he was just acting to protect her — from herself.

The Internet celeb called cops to the California home of San Diego Chargers star Shawne Merriman early Sunday, and he was charged with battery and false imprisonment. But he maintains he was just concerned that Tila (real last name: Nguyen) was too drunk to drive home.

“We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety,” the linebacker explained in a statement. “At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided.”

“There was absolutely no wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Merriman,” his lawyer insisted to the AP, explaining that more than a dozen people had been reveling together at Shawne’s home, and that the reality star was “extremely inebriated.” Reportedly, she and the football star had been hanging out at a San Diego nightclub before taking the party back to his pad.

“He essentially was doing what was appropriate under the circumstances in trying to protect the safety of Miss Tequila. There were numerous eyewitnesses that will support his version of the events that transpired at his home.”

Plus, the fact that she changed her last name to “Tequila” would kinda seem to imply she likes a tipple.

If there were no injuries on her then that says a lot. Merriman is a big ass dude and Tequila is a munchkin. If he had whooped her or choked her she'd be fucked up like Rihanna. They will be back together in a couple weeks.

Tila Tequila's disappearing tweets suggest second side to Merriman incident

Reality TV personality Tila Tequila released a series of statements on her Twitter page Monday night in which she disputed Shawne Merriman's portrayal of the incident on Sunday morning in which he was arrested and accused of battering her.
But many of the statements, which suggested the true story of the incident had not emerged and hinted that steroids were involved, were later removed from her Twitter feed.
She tweeted "Steroid Abuse Can Cause Aggression" and linked it to a story about Merriman's four-game suspension for a violation of the performance-enhancing substances policy in 2007. She also referred to Tuesday as "Judgment day" in another tweet.

PFT documented several of the tweets before they disappeared. In them, Tequila said she would speak about the Merriman incident on Tuesday.

Merriman has denied assaulting Tequila and said he was trying to help the MTV personality, who he said was intoxicated, get home safely.

James Brennan, the owner of the nightclub where Merriman and Tequila spent time on Saturday, said the MTV host was lying when she said she wasn't drinking.
