Ok so i have a dvd player and a HD TV and I must say the sound and picture is amazing. A friend of mine told me there really isnt much of a diffent in BLU RAY if u already have a HDTV.

maybe not so much now---a low end player is like $130. when they were all $400-500--hell no. now that the ps3 is going down to $299, i'll get one. but my disc purchases will be limited to new releases with great special effects. old movies on blu ray are like

My PS3 could upscale regular dvd as well and they definitely looked a lot better than my standard dvd player. However, I dont know whether it overheated or what but my PS3 switched itself off and won't turn back on and it's outside of warranty so I'm pretty much screwed.

So as far as your question, when I had working blu-ray, I thought it was brilliant. Now that my PS3 just sits there mocking me, I think it's a waste of money.

Yeah get one, seriously. After playing Assassin's Creed on a normal telly then switching to a new Samsung Scarlet I was curious about Bluray. I had figured it was another "improvement" like mp3 (sarcasm) but I went out and got a copy of M Night Shyamalan's 'Signs' and the opening shots with the cornfields are like

The clarity is amazing.

The few exceptions being CGI animated movies and The Dark Knight was pretty cool too.

I'll watch the grainiest, blockiest, chroma-fucked AVI of a third-generation VHS copy if a movie deserves my attention.

Lack of visual clarity doesn't bother me as much as lack of audible clarity.

There is a BIG difference generally in clarity between blu-ray discs and standard DVDs. And most blu-ray releases have uncompressed sound so with the right entertainment system you can blow your ears off.

its not the HD quality that's in question with the videophiles... its the storage format. If everything goes to downloads, then blu-ray is a waste. It seems HD is moving away from physical discs.

We got Blue Ray and a HD big screen you do notice the difference, although I'm not sure if I'd pay for it if I lived on my own. My dad wanted it specifically for the Stevie Wonder - Live At Last DVD. And now u can count Stevie's hair and all. Detail is high.

Depends on your perspective.

Blu-ray is the highest 1080p HD available commercially so u will get the best picture by todays standard. Having said that, the content of the programming that u watch has the same, ending, beginning and middle so blu-ray does NOT add anything new 2 that. The DVD's that come in Blu-ray do contain some unique features that can ONLY be found on a Blu-ray disk though.....
How is that? As clear as mud.

..and one more thing. My Blu-ray player upconverts my regular DVD's and they look GREAT. It's worth every penny in my book.

Worth noting players are as slow as f*ck. Pop the disc in, put the kettle on, go for a walk, have a bath, etc, etc,

depending on how far you sit back, and the quality of your panel, you might not notice that much of an improvement. a cheap and nasty 32" LCD is going to make anything look like shit, but on the same hand, a good quality plasma that's setup properly, fed with some good SD source material can look good, and better than a crap 32" with an HD source

certainly when you get a decent size and good quality panel you can clearly see the difference in video quality. the clarity of colour is much better, but this is often overlooked as most people wouldn't have the same source material in high quality SD as well as HD for a fair comparison. the resolution is much greater too, as is the audio, which technically can be higher than CD quality, whereas DVD multichannel sound is of comparable quality to mp3, and lesser than CD. the bitrate on bluray is also higher, as the disc has a much greater capacity, thus even watching SD material such as the extras, you can get a much better video quality, and sound quality, simply due to the higher technical specifications

as for price, the ps3 is not the cheapest player on the market, but one of the best value for money players, even if you exclude the fact it plays games and does a ton of other things. you can pick up brand new ps3's for £220 or less if you spend a few seconds googling for a reputable dealer. you can get other reasonable players at £150, and you can easily get budget players for £100 or less. in both the states and the UK there have even been limited supply of players sub £100 and $100. i've seen proof of players in the UK as low as £30, so the prices are coming down to the same level as a budget (note that budget does not mean cheap crap from walmart, i mean entry level price for reputable brands) dvd players. media wise, if you shop around, again sticking to reputable suppliers, the movies are of comparable price to dvds, for both new and back catalogue releases. for a new format, the price of hardware and software is coming to a reasonable level quicker than any preceeding succesful format (ie. HD-dvd is cheaper but for a reason)

so the answer is no. the only people that say yes either don't know a thing about AV, don't care about AV, or are jealous that they can't get it

people spend multi millions on creating movies to be enjoyed, so if you care about the movie, the least the viewer can do is get a half decent setup to view them on
