Officer Severs Woman's Finger During Arrest

BC-Police-Severed Finger,0234
Detroit officer severs woman's finger with utility knife during arrest

DETROIT -- Police asked prosecutors Tuesday to file charges against an officer who cut off a woman's fingertip with a 4-inch utility knife as he tried to arrest her in a bar parking lot.

Officer Anthony Johnson also deeply cut another finger of the suspect as he tried to cut off her coat sleeve so he could put her in handcuffs. The fingertip was recovered but could not be reattached.

Johnson was placed on desk duty after Sunday's incident.

"The department has no policies and procedures that would cause an officer to use a knife to make an arrest," Deputy Chief Gary Brown said. "We don't issue knives."

Johnson had asked Joni Gullas, 45, for identification as she sat in a van in parking lot. He said she refused and smelled of alcohol.

The plainclothes officer said he reached inside to open the door, but Gullas pinned his hand with her knee and began moving the van. The two struggled and fell onto the pavement. According to the police report, Johnson pulled on Gullas' coat sleeve and she pulled her hand inside.

Concerned that she might be reaching for a weapon, Johnson pulled out the knife and cut the sleeve off, he wrote.

Gullas, who has not been charged with a crime, said she thought she was being attacked.

MOST people have it coming when things like this happened. If they wouldn't fight this wouldn't happen. I know their are expceptions, but I feel safe in saying that 99% of the time you will be fine if you just don't fight. I have also never been arrested, so...

Lovemachine, did you not read the story, the woman thought she was being attacked. What if your wife or sister were sitting in a parking lot waiting for a girlfriend after a couple and a guy starts harrasing her? What was she doing wrong? Did he identify himself? Then the guy used a knife when dept. policy has no provision for that.

i don't see how in the hell someone could defend a police officer cutting a lady's finger off... i mean, shit... there are ways to detain people without severing body parts...

next thing ya know, fucking pigs are gonna be stabbing people to death... "it looked like they were grabbing for a weapon, so i had to stab them 34 times in order to get the cuffs on them..."

I just read the story more closely and I missed an important statement:

The department has no policies and procedures that would cause an officer to use a knife to make an arrest," Deputy Chief Gary Brown said. "We don't issue knives."

So I guess I was wrong in this case, but many times people hurt themselves while being arrested because they insist on fighting back.

Also, I saw the woman interviewed on local news this morning (I'm from Detroit) and she said that she asked the plain-clothes officer for identification and he didn't give it to her, so that is another reason she struggled.
I can't blame her. I hope she sues the shit out of the Detroit Police.
