Are there any cake decorators in the house?

I've decided to make my daughters christening cake shake and having never done it before I could use some help (and quite possibly some serious therapy!) lol

Anyone?
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

My Mom use to make cakes for EVERYONE. She had all the frosting tips, and cake separators, all those goodies. I made my cousins cake for his 1st and 2nd birthday. First one was a Winnie the Pooh Cake, and the second was a towered clown cake. What do you need help with?

Hi there cake makers! lol

OK - here's my practice cake so far...

I made a chocolate mud cake (without the coffee), chocolate butter creamed the middle and round the outside:

Then I bought some cheap ready to roll icing and covered it...

I know that it isn't very smooth (I've ordered some icing smoothers off the internet but haven't received them yet).

What do you think? Any top tips you'd like to bestow unto me? confuse

The buttercream felt a bit squidgy under the icing, though I'd left it in the fridge overnight hmmm What do you usually put between your chocolate cake and icing?

Do you need to use fondant? My mom used to make/decorate me and my brother's birthday cakes when we were little. Flowers, different tips, etc. I learned how to do it, too; but I don't practice. She never used fondant, just a thicker frosting made mainly from confectioners suger, milk, and butter -- not butter cream so it doesn't melt and it gets firm on the outside once it sets. What specifically do you want help with?
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

A crumb coating. nod That way when you ice the cake, you don't get all those nasty little crumbs up all in your frosting. smile

No, the first one... I did it with chocolate butter cream - the second IS fondant lol

It seemed to work though, even though I probably made the crumb coating way too thick. I cut into it today and it was freaking YUMMY!!! thumbs up!

The christening is next sunday and I want it completely finished by saturday (as I have a load of other baking to do) When do you think I should make it? How long does it keep for?
