Fashions from earlier times you wish would come back I secretly long for a collar like this...
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The 1920's was the best decade for fashion last century. People had serious style back then. Going back further....I'd walk around in an ancient Egyptian loincloth "...and If all of this Love Talk ends with Prince getting married to someone other than me, all I would like to do is give Prince a life size Purple Fabric Cloud Guitar that I made from a vintage bedspread that I used as a Christmas Tree Skirt." I'll wear suspenders, spats and a hot smoking jacket with a cravatte(sp?) and stand in a corner with a cocktail and a cigar. Then we'll do the Charleston and go see a Benny Goodman show! Agreed - the 1920's still haven't been topped in American fashion.

Especially considering what's popular now. Where did our taste go? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

And to answer: Anything from previous decades when men actually put effort into their appearance. Most guys' idea of getting done up now is an untucked button down shirt with their jeans. Not that that's not easy on the eyes, mind, it just doesn't count as dressing nice.
I'm a big fan of the 1930's/40's trenchcoat and fedora over a 3 piece suit look. Think Dick Tracy, with less yellow. Or Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. Even though it was sort of a glossy look at early 60's style, I really like the style of the men in Hairspray. Looking pretty sharp. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I want to wear a fancy June Cleaver apron while I clean and vacuum my home in heels and pearls.

And I think the late 40s to around 1955 definitely rivaled the 20s for high style. Christian Dior's "New Look?" Get the fuck outta here... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. I've found fancy aprons in vintage shops and I've been thinking of starting a collection. I love them. |

I hate to tell you this...but Benny Goodman didn't form his first band until 1934 (in 1938, he was the first jazz artist ever to play Carnegie Hall). And he died in 1986 - so good luck hearing him now. [Edited 8/24/09 16:18pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

* Capes
* Unbifurcated garments for Western men * Everyday academic regalia on university campuses * Lapel flowers... for no special reason * Bowlers (although I'm gonna single-handedly bring 'em back this fall/summer) * Clan insignia/prints (crests, plaids, kente, etc.) that actually mean something [Edited 8/24/09 16:45pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Some mod fashion, I also like. 1970's Halston is also hot and chic. [Edited 8/24/09 20:57pm]

I think the current problem is not so much a lack of style because really, anything can be defined as "style", but a lack of class. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

If I wasn't such a complete lazyass when it comes to hair care, I'd seriously consider getting a bob and marcelling my hair every day. That look is fantastic. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
