I have loved loved loved certain frames, only to find that they are horribly unflattering on my face. One pair made my nose look huge, for example, which I never would have guessed until I put them on.

If you're lucky you might get a good sales person who knows what will suit your face... then again you may get some feckless idiot who only wants to put you in the most expensive frames in the shop - it's the luck of the draw!

Mine are Coach. The round temple pieces come with both plain and crystal rings. (The ones I have are black - rather than tortoise.)

Anyway...back to the topic...

There are guides that tell you what type of frame to look for based on the shape of your face.
It took a while for me to get used to the skinny rectangular glasses that are best for my un-masculine pudgy face.

However, I think that big glasses are making a comeback. I was flipping through GQ and I saw alot of them in the ads (I need to replace mine).

I wouldn't mind re-living my 20's with a pair of round wire-end glasses - preferably with the flip-up shades.

I don't like wearing prescription glasses, but I would recommend low glare and non-reflective ones.
The frames I have now, have improved from some in the past ... but I don't wear my glasses for fashion, I don't have fashion I only wear them at night to watch T.V., when I first get up in the morning, when I read and mostly just to give my eyes a break from contacts.
