Now that I think about it, I had a high school teacher who told me I needed to smile more, and that I looked so much better when I had a smile on my face. WTH, I did not feel like smiling, since I went to school with some real shitty kids, and I HATED every minute of it! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

This thread brings to mind Jermaine Jackson's performance of "Smile", which he sang at MJ's memorial performance:
Lyrics to "Smile" by Nat King Cole Words by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons and Music by Charlie Chaplin Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though its breaking When there are clouds in the sky, youll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow Youll see the sun come shining through for you Light up your face with gladness Hide every trace of sadness Although a tear may be ever so near Thats the time you must keep on trying Smile, whats the use of crying? Youll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile Thats the time you must keep on trying Smile, whats the use of crying? Youll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile [Edited 8/26/09 6:12am] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My favorite time was when a supervisor had just learned that I was interviewing with a bigger, better company. He didn't want to just come out and have that discussion with me, so he tried to act as if he were imparting some professional wisdom, master to apprentice and such. "You should smile more, tell more jokes," were his words, I believe. (I'm not even going to get into the subtext to that mess; I'll simply allude to it.) The irony lay in this: That day, I was wearing a tie featuring: When I pointed this out, he just sputtered.... ... and that's when I smiled for him. Did he ask you to tap dance with a watermelon under each arm too???

Okay, here's another question that I want to ask you all: How many of you have ever been told that you don't talk to your coworkers enough. I have heard that from several employers, and it drives me batty! The last time someone told me that, I told them, "I don't talk a whole lot to my other coworkers, because I got yelled at several times, because a boss thought I was talking too much." The person who I told that to probably thought I was lying and/or exaggerating, but I was telling the truth.
I think part of the problem is that I have a loud voice that carries, and when bosses hear me talking to someone, they think to themselves, "She's talking too much! I need to talk to her about that!" Either that, or I just pick the wrong damn times to talk to someone. On the other end of the spectrum, I have had people tell me that I don't talk enough to my co-workers. WTF, I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't. I am very friendly and approachable to the people that I work with, but I never can seem to find a happy medium as far as what constitutes too much talking and not enough talking. So I tend to keep the conversations brief, short, and to the point. I would rather be seen as someone who may be a bit standoffish but is dependable and gets my work done, then someone who stands around gibber jabbering and wasting time, and is not getting anything done. [Edited 8/26/09 13:21pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Actually, I'm a talker. I was the kid who always had "Lynn is a Social Butterfly" in the comments section of my report card.
In my Jr. High Yearbook, my SS teacher signed it, "LynLyn- Shut up!" My b.f. will say to me, "Can we just have quiet time now?" But at work, I stay in my classroom during my preps and put on music and work. One of my coworkers came to me and said, "U don't like me, do U?" I looked at her like she was crazy! She said I never talk to her. I said, "I don't talk to ANYBODY here!" I thought it was weird that she felt the need to walk up to the 3rd floor for that. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"
